Major League Baseball announced Monday that its postseason, with more teams, will begin on October 7, with the four games of the new wild card round. The other games will be on October 8 and 9, if necessary.
The new format includes 12 teams that qualified for the playoffs, instead of the 10 that entered between 2012 and 2021. The exception was the 16 that participated in the 2020 postseason after a regular season shortened to 60 games due to the coronavirus pandemic. .
The first two teams in each circuit will not play the first round. The third seed will face the sixth and the fourth will meet the fifth. The team with the highest seed will be home in the series to the best of three games.
The division series of both leagues, to the best of five games, will begin on October 11.
Immediately afterwards, the league championship series, to the best of seven games, will start on October 18 in the National and on October 19 in the American.
The opening date of the campaign was pushed back from March 31 to April 7. The lockout lasted 99 days and ended on March 10. The regular season was extended to October 5.
The World Series will start on Oct. 28, matching its latest start in 2009.
