Tim Burton brings the Addams Family to Netflix with the series ‘Wednesday’

The curiosity of those who wanted to know more about Wednesday, Tim Burton’s series about the Addams Family which is one of the most anticipated releases next fallor, has already been satisfied. Netflix has released the official trailer from the series where we can already see Wednesday plotting evil plans in the Addams mansion or punishing his Nevermore Academy classmates with perverse occurrences. “I did not know that I would enter a nightmare… Full of mystery, chaos and murders, I am going to love this,” says the protagonist in this preview of the series.

The series is centered on Wednesday, the daughter of the family, played by Jenna Ortega in, as the official synopsis points out, “a detective mystery infused with supernatural elements about Wednesday’s years as a student at Nevermore Academy. In it you see Wednesday’s attempts to harness his fledgling psychic ability, stop a monstrous murder spree that has terrorized the city Y solve the paranormal mystery in which his parents were involved 25 years ago. And all this while managing his new – and very complicated – relationships in Nevermore”.

IT IS NOT ANOTHER VERSION

After a brief teaser in which we saw Jenna Ortega (Scream) characterized as Wednesday and in which Thing also appeared, in the new images we can also see Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gómez, Isaac Ordóñez as Puggsley . It is also known that Christina Ricci will appear in the series in a role yet to be revealed. What remains a mystery is everything concerning the character of Fetid.

Lto series, of which Tim Burton has directed four of the eight episodes of which it consists in addition to being an executive producer, it is created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville), who indicate their intention that Wednesday not be seen as a new version of the works that have already been done previously around the Addams family such as the television series of the 60s or the films of the 90s by Barry Sonnenfeld. “It is something that takes place within the universe that we already know and at the same time it is a story of its own, points out Alfred Gough.

It was in February 2021 when Netflix announced Wednesday and that the project would be in the hands of Tim Burton, who in this way made the leap to television. Teddy Biaselli, director of teen and family series at Netflix, wrote that the platform and MGM/UA were delighted to announce “Wednesday (Wednesday), a new live-action comedy that will see our favorite maiden of the macabre become protagonist from head to toe”.

BURTON’S UNIQUE VISION

He summed up the pitch from series creators Al Gough and Miles Millar by noting that they “had nailed down the tone, the spirit and the characters, but offered another side to the story… Then we got the news that Tim Burton, the visionary director and lifelong Addams Family fan, wanted to make his debut as a television director with this series. Tim has a good track record of empowering stories about social outcasts like Edward Scissorhands or Batman. And now he brings his unique vision to Wednesday and his creepy classmates at Nevermore Academy.”

There is no specific release date but the month of October and the dates close to Halloween are being considered to check, as Netflix points out, “how justice is done to Wednesday while preparing for the terrifying underworld called maturity”.

It is not the first time that a production derived from The Addams Family has been made, since the story has even included a comedy, a Tony Award-nominated musical and an animated adaptation that was dubbed by well-known names in Hollywood such as Oscar. Isaac or Charlize Theron, among others.

The ambition of the series is, co-creator Miles Millar has stated, “to make an 8-hour Tim Burton film, something unique.”
