Netflix’s new limited series, ‘Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,’ details the chilling life of one of America’s most notorious serial killers. Although the series, starring Evan Peters and created by Ryan Murphy, is a fictional account, it is based on the brutal murders that Dahmer carried out for more than a decade without being detected.

Dahmer raped, murdered and dismembered at least 17 men and boys in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, between 1978 and 1991, shocking the United States with the magnitude of his crimes, which included cannibalism and necrophilia.

Although the series takes a closer look at his victims, it highlights one of them who escaped and played a major role in the killer’s subsequent arrest.

Here we provide some information to better understand the story of Jeffrey Dahmer:

What crimes did Jeffrey Dahmer commit?

Dahmer committed his first murder in 1978, just three weeks after graduating from high school, when he picked up a hitchhiker named Steven Hicks and lured him to his house. As Hicks tried to leave, Dahmer hit him with a dumbbell before strangling him to death.

Following Hicks’s murder, Dahmer enrolled at The Ohio State University, shortly after dropping out after one term as a result of his persistent alcohol abuse. He later enlisted in the United States Army, where he received an honorable discharge, according to The New York Times.

He returned to Ohio to live with his father and stepmother, where he continued to drink heavily. He was later sent to live with his grandmother in Wisconsin while he struggled to hold down a job and faced multiple arrests, including disorderly conduct, according to Biography.com.

In November 1987, Dahmer killed again, this time a man named Steven Tuomi. After this murder he began to actively search for victims. In 1991, he had murdered 17 men and boys.

How did he kill them?

Dahmer was methodical in the way he sought out his victims and killed them. He often picked them up at gay bars, malls and bus stops, according to ‘Biography,’ and he lured them to his house with promises of money or sex.

Jeffrey would then provide his victims with alcohol that he had mixed with drugs and kill them. After the victims died, Jeffrey would have sex with them and dismember their bodies, sometimes keeping body parts, such as their skulls or genitalia, as souvenirs, Biography reported. He discarded his bones in a drum.

Jeffrey also took photos during the murder process, according to ‘The Sun’. One of her victims, 19-year-old Errol Lindsey, died after she punctured his head and poured hydrochloric acid on him.

Jeffrey found sexual pleasure and reached the feeling of absolute control devouring the brains of some of his victims. She did it the last time he killed. He felt that every time he ate someone’s brain or drank someone’s blood that person became a permanent part of him. The skulls he kept as trophies he not only whitened but also varnished.

How was Jeffrey Dahmer caught?

In July 1991, Dahmer approached three men and offered them money to pose for nude photos. One of them, Tracy Edwards, agreed and followed Dahmer back to her apartment, handcuffing him and putting a knife to his chest, telling Edwards he intended to eat his heart, ABC News reported.

Edwards was eventually able to escape by knocking Dahmer to the ground, allowing him to run out the open front door. He was able to stop two Milwaukee police officers, whom he led back to Dahmer’s apartment.

When they arrived, they noticed an open drawer containing Polaroid photographs of human bodies in various stages of dismemberment. Once Dahmer saw the Polaroid photos, he tried to run away, but was handcuffed, according to ‘History.com’.

After his arrest on July 22, Dahmer gave a detailed confession to police to “a total of 17 murders,” according to AP.

What was he sentenced for?

Following his confession, Dahmer was charged with four counts of first-degree intentional homicide on July 25, followed by eight more counts of murder on August 6 and three more on August 22, bringing the total to 15 in Wisconsin. .

In September 1991, Dahmer pleaded “innocent by reason of mental illness”but then changed his plea to “guilty but insane” in January 1992.

His trial began on January 30, 1992, and closing arguments were given on February 14, 1992. The following day, Dahmer was ruled sane and not suffering from a mental disorder at the time of each of the murders. He was convicted of 16 of the murders and sentenced to 16 life terms in prison.

How did Jeffrey Dahmer die?

Although he was transferred to Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin after his sentence, his jail time did not last long. On November 28, 1994, a fellow prisoner beat him to death. She was 34 years old.

Since then, it has been the focus of several film and television projects, including the 2002 biopic ‘Dahmer’ starring Jeremy Renner, the 2017 film ‘My Friend Dahmer’ starring Ross Lynch, and now the television series ‘Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’ starring Peters.
