Netflix has premiered ‘Dahmer‘, a series dealing with the gruesome crimes of the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmerknown as “the butcher of Milwaukee”, where details about the lives of the victims are told before Dahmer ends them.
Played by Evan Peters, the series explores Dahmer from a different point of view, from the perspective of his victims and the racist and systemic failures that “allowed one of America’s most notorious serial killers to continue his killing spree through full view for more than a decade”, according to the synopsis.
The Milwaukee butcher eluded justice for 13 years after he murdered his first victim, Steven Hicks, in 1978. In total, during these 13 years, Dahmer killed 17 young men in Ohio and Wisconsin, crimes he confessed to having committed. committed after being arrested in his apartment in 1991.
Dahmer was strangely forthcoming about the details of the murders, which resulted in him receiving multiple life sentences. On July 22, 1991, Tracy Edwards, his latest victim, managed to escape in handcuffs.
Searching Dahmer’s room revealed photographs of his victims’ bodies and organs, including a head and heart in the refrigerator, as well as severed genitalia and five human skulls.
In another drawer, a complete skeleton was found with the bones cleaned with chlorine, a dissected scalp and a 260-liter drum filled with acid with three torsos and other human parts. At the time of his arrest, after being subdued, on the ground, he is said to have uttered the words: “For what I did I should be dead”.
The psychiatrists who treated Dahmer indicated that he was ill, but he was found guilty anyway, with extenuation of insanity, to be sentenced in a special prison for the mentally ill. However, the mitigating factor was ruled out.
In principle, he had pleaded not guilty, but changed his statement due to the large amount of evidence found against him. The jury then found him mentally sound and as a result he was ultimately sentenced to 15 consecutive life sentences.
The serial killer admitted to having practiced cannibalism, having eaten the biceps of one of his victims, as well as having masturbated before human parts and skulls of whom he considered beautiful. He further testified that the three heads found in his refrigerator and his freezer, with the flesh intact, belonged to his last three victims.
He was eventually diagnosed with schizotypal personality disorder, a psychotic disorder, and borderline personality disorder. He was murdered in prison a few years after being locked up, on November 28, 1994, an inmate named Christopher Scarver murdered Dahmer in the bathroom of the gym at Columbia Correctional Institute in Wisconsin.
