One of the most popular and recognized true crime documentary series, which practically set the standards of the true crime modern, was the french miniseries The Staircase by Jean-Xavier Lestrade, who followed with his camera the case surrounding the mysterious death of Kathleen Peterson in her home and how what seemed like an accidental fall down the stairs takes a turn when the evidence points to her husband, the writer Michael Peterson. The original story had continuity with new installments as the case developed. Now, fiction picks up the witness to not only recreate what surrounded the investigation (and even the filming of the documentary series), but also to fictionalize the family relationships and the emotions that were hidden behind. Colin Firth and Toni Collette play the main couple.
