There haven’t been many details about the idolthe new HBO series starring and co-created by The Weeknd and the brain behind euphoria, Sam Levinson, since its initial green light last fall. But that changed on Saturday when the Weeknd introduced a 90-second teaser during a break from their performance at Met Life Stadium (New York), one of the most important stops on his last tour After Hours til Dawn.
From the first seconds, in which you resort to the “sick and twisted minds” of weeknd and Levinson as series hookwe enter a torrent of Hollywood excesses, centered on a young pop starplayed by Lily-Rose Depp, who enters into a romantic relationship with The Weeknd’s charactera self-help businessman who also runs a cult.
The trailer announces that the series is “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood”a claim that seems to be well supported by the clip’s quick cuts featuring electronic sex, Spanish-style mansions, cocaine, firearms and confusing shots of packed clubs. It seems that Levinson is doubling down on all the aesthetic whims that prompted euphoria to become one of the most watched programs on HBO.
the idol has undergone significant changes since its production began. In April, Deadline reported that, after filming several episodes, series director Amy Seimetz (co-creator of The Girlfriend Experienceavailable on Starz), and co-star Suzanna Son were leaving the series, taking a “new creative direction” according to HBO. Sources told Deadline that The Weeknd was not happy with the way the series was developingand “felt the series was leaning too much into a ‘female perspective,'” focusing more on Lily-Rose Depp’s character than her own.
Secondly, Levinson’s deeper involvement in the project is being met with intense skepticismdue to the divided public response to the second season of euphoriawith some viewers criticizing on social media the amount of female nudity, the treatment of its characters, and a less than diverse group of writers than before.
Since several episodes of the idol when the big creative overhaul happened, It is unclear if the series will fulfill the original order of seven episodes. from HBO or it will be cut.
