Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner expects Aaron Boone to continue as manager.
“As far as Boone is concerned, we had signed him and for the same reasons I mentioned a year ago: I think he’s a very good manager,” Steinbrenner said Wednesday as he left the Yankees’ player development complex. “I don’t see any change there.”
Last October, Boone agreed to a three-year deal with a club alternative to renew him in 2025. In his fifth season as a manager, New York was 61-23 in July, which began to draw comparisons with the Yankees. 1998 champions.
But plagued by injuries, New York went with a 38-40 record the rest of the season.
Cleveland extended the division series to a maximum of five games, but lost to New York. The Yankees then succumbed to Houston in a four-game sweep of the American League Championship Series.
“We didn’t do the job… The time has come to do it,” Steinbrenner acknowledged. “Any year we don’t win a championship is disappointing. We had a lot of good times, then some bad times. We had some injuries like everyone else.
“But you have to give the credit to the Astros. They are a very good team from head to toe. We just couldn’t give our best level of play.”
New York changed managers 21 times in 36 seasons from 1973 to 2008, when George Steinbrenner was controlling owner. There has been only one driver change in 14 seasons with Hal Steinbrenner — Boone replaced Joe Girardi after the 2017 season.
The Yankees haven’t appeared in the World Series since 2009, when they won their 27th title.
New York was without second baseman DJ LeMahieu, who would require big toe surgery, and outfielder Andrew Benintendi, who is recovering from wrist surgery, in the postseason.
Steinbrenner declined to discuss the impending decision of outfielder Aaron Judge, who could become a free agent.
