Comic-Con audiences got a sneak peek at “The Rings of Power” series from the “Lord of the Rings” saga on Friday at San Diego. Amazon Studios unveiled the new trailer for the series that takes place thousands of years before the events of JRR Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings.” Stephen Colberta self-proclaimed Tolkien fan, moderated a panel on the series in Hall H, the largest at the popular culture convention.

Under the leadership of executive producers JD Payne and Patrick McKay, “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, when kingdoms rose and fell, and evil forces threatened to fill the world with darkness.

“The Rings of Power” will take audiences to fantastical locations such as the eleven kingdoms of Lindon and Eregion, the dwarven kingdom of Khazad-dûm, the lands of the south and the wastelands of the north, the torn seas and the island kingdom of Númenór, as well as to introduce many new characters including Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), Elrond (Robert Aramayo), and King Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker).

The eight-part series will debut on Prime Video on September 2, with new episodes premiering weekly. According to reports, it is the most expensive series made so far, with a budget of 465 million dollars. Amazon bought the rights from Tolkien’s estate for $250 million in 2017.

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, told The Hollywood Reporter last year that while the number is “a crazy headline that’s fun to click on,” it was actually to “build the infrastructure of what will support the entire series” that he described as “a show that builds huge worlds”.

Salke also said that a “giant global audience will need to see it as a time-bound program,” but that they are “pretty confident that will happen.”

Comic-Con kicked off this week at the San Diego Convention Center in full force, something that hadn’t happened since 2019 due to the pandemic. Many major studios spent heavily to promote their upcoming movies and TV shows. The convention will continue until Sunday.
