Latin elves and African princesses revolutionize ‘The Lord of the Rings’ series

The new series of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has shown that JRR Tolkien’s fantasy is full of diversity and proof of this is the participation of actors such as the African-Iranian Sophia Nomvete and the Puerto Rican Ismael Cruz.

“It is our mission to take the excellence of Tolkien’s world and put it into the world and say ‘this is the vision of society’ for the next generations,” said Nomvete, who plays Princess Disa, during a press conference with Mexican media.

The actress came to this reflection after realizing that thanks to fiction, people educated themselves and formed opinions on certain topics.

“Before I thought that we had to take things from society to capture them in the fantastic world, but I have realized that it is the other way around and that it is actually our responsibility to realize that it is from fiction that society is nourished”, mentioned.

That is why he celebrated the opening of the series on this type of subject and considered that it is not a forced situation and that it does not conflict with the universe created by the British writer.

“I think there is no difference with the books, the books are the world, the fantasy, they are an immensity of races and visuals invented by Tolkien and all of that is open to interpretation and that is the enjoyment of fantasy and in reality”, delved.

Likewise, Cruz, who will be the first Latino elf in history, is proud to be able to show the power of the Hispanic community in a blockbuster.

“Beyond the books, we (Latinos) exist, I exist, we are here, what blows my mind is the fact that we would not have had the opportunity to exist in this type of world before. I understand that it is my right as a human to be able to experience magic and whatever profession I want to pursue,” he assured.

He also argued that if the topic generated “so passionate” conversations around the world, it was because “there is still a lot to do.”

“There have to be discussions in studios and production companies, but they also have to happen in our own cultures and societies,” he added.

The series, which premieres on Prime Video on September 2, is set “thousands of years before” the events narrated in “The Hobbit” and in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, with no trace of the “one ring” which Tolkien’s protagonists fought for on the big screen.

The first three chapters were directed by the Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona and the creation was carried out by Patrick McKay and JD Payne who explored the origin and creation of the rings of power from the writer’s appendices.

Also present at the conference were Owain Arthur, Leon Wadham, Trystan Gravelle, Ben Walker, Morfydd Clark, and Charlie Vickers.
