SEOUL.- The Leader from North Korea, Kim Jong-un, reappeared before the cameras last Saturday after having been away from the public for a month. But something drew attention to the image of the dictator and generated speculation about his health: experts suggest that he lost weight.
As the leader of one of the world’s most hermetic nations with nuclear power, Kim is the center of constant international monitoring.
His health is closely monitored by foreign intelligence agencies and he aroused particular interest in the South Korean Intelligence Service (NIS), reported NK news.
The media analyzed images of the president taken in April this year and compared them with his most recent appearance this month, which led him to affirm that “You may have lost a significant amount of weight.”
He even compared old and current photos of his wrist, showing that Kim’s Swiss watch strap, which he wears regularly, is now tighter, indicating a slimmer wrist.
The news agency agreed Yonhap from South Korea, which suggested that Kim’s figure was noticeably slimmer in the posted images.
The reason for the young man’s weight loss is uncertain. An analyst told NK News that it could be “A simple matter of a healthy lifestyle change or a more complex issue.”
If Kim intentionally lost weight, then “he will probably improve his position at home,” he told the outlet. However, if it is due to illness, then the North Korean government must be anticipating “his succession behind the scenes.”
Kim, who is believed to be around 37 years old, has taken long breaks from the cameras. Last year, absent for three weeks for reasons that remain an unsolved mystery that revolves around speculation of a serious health condition. Some reports warned that he had died.
The South Korean site Daily NK reported back then that Kim had to undergo heart surgery in April due to “his obesity, his pronounced smoking and being overworked.”
Kim has a heart history in her family. His father, Kim Jong-il, died of a suspected heart attack in December 2011.
