How ‘I am Groot’ connects with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Marvel’s new animated series I Am Grootoffers fans of the MCU of Disney+ exactly what they want: the non-stop antics of Baby Groot. The five five-minute shorts put the smallest guardian in the galaxy in scenarios with small stakes but great potential for adventure. Groot travels to alien worlds, transforming and nearly wrecking his ship while pursuing his artistic leanings. It’s a fun series, but is it canon in the MCU of Disney+?

You know, does it matter? Okay, it seems weird to ask if an incredibly charming all-ages series takes place in the same cinematic universe that Thanos almost conquered. But given that one of the main selling points of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is interconnectedness, it’s a question worth asking! So…

Is ‘I Am Groot’ in the MCU canon?

I don’t see why not, but the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn, yes you see it. In an Instagram question, Gunn addressed this question directly saying: “Some people at Marvel seem to think it’s canonically MCU. I myself find that hard to see“. One of those people at Marvel is none other than Brad Winderbaum, the head of Streaming, Television and Animation at Marvel Studios. He has stated that not only I Am Groot is canon, but specifically takes place between the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the first post-credits scene of Vol. 2. That would make sense, since GOTGv2 it marked Baby Groot’s first outing, and he later aged into a teenager during one of that film’s post-credits scenes.

However, there is another opinion at play in the ongoing saga of whether this 25 minute run of a baby tree running amok is MCU canon: the Disney+ synopsis for the short. I Am Groot “Groot’s First Steps” says it takes place”after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1– which makes sense because that movie ends with Baby Groot waking up in his pot and dancing, and “Groot’s First Steps” starts with him getting out of the pot. The other shorts, notably “Groot’s Chase” and “Magnum Opus “, they have to take place in the sweet spot at the end of Vol. 2 that Winderbaum mentioned. Why? Because Groot is seen running through the Quadrant, which is the ship the Guardians acquired at the end of that movie.

Ultimately, whether you count or not I Am Groot as part of the MCU canon is up to you. It seems that the official line from Disney and Marvel Studios is that it is canon. This is supported by the fact that while the series is animated, Groot and the environments are animated in the same style and with the same realism that is used in the live-action Marvel movies. Also, nothing in I Am Groot it directly contradicts continuity, so, you know, go for it.
