HBO cancels ‘Westworld’ by surprise: the series is left without the fifth season with which its creators wanted to conclude it

Bad start to the weekend for fans of ‘Westworld’. HBO just announce cancellation of the popular science fiction drama after four seasons, which in practice is double bad news for those who have followed the story so far: in addition to the cancellation itself, the decision leaves the series without a fifth installment to conclude its plot.

In October, Jonathan Nolan himself, co-creator of the series, shared his hopes that the company would give the green light to a new season that could finish it off. “We always raise a fifth and final season,” Nolan pointed out during an interview with deadline in which he shared having “high hopes” of achieving it. The creators, as another of its managers, Lisa Joy, has in fact already had an end in mind. “We hope to reach it,” she slipped.

HBO’s decision can be explained by various factors.

“An amazing odyssey

The move comes shortly after, for example, Warner Bros Discovery advanced further spending cuts. “We’re reimagining how this organization is structured,” recently explained the executive directorDavid Zaslav. Another of the factors that complete the context is the very drift of the series, which during its first two seasons rose as one of the most emblematic and recognized successes of HBO for lose thrust with subsequent deliveries.

Its ratings fell on Rotten Tomatoes and the popularity of the fourth installment was far below that achieved by other great successes and HBO, such as ‘The house of the dragon’.

“Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonathan have taken viewers on an amazing odyssey, raising the bar at every turn. We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and to all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It has been exciting to join them on this journey.” HBO explains.

Also wanted to pronounce Kilter Films, the production company of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, which highlights the making of `Westworld´as “one of the most important moments of our careers”. “We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and bright worlds. We’ve been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness—both human and beyond—in the short space of time left before our AI overlords forbid us.”

Now the unknown is what will be the reaction of the followers of ‘Westworld’ before a decision that leaves it unfinished, movement, remember in Espinof, which is not usually usual in HBO. In the case of ‘Deadwood’ a movie was shot more than a decade after the series ended.
