Gael García opens conversation about the climate crisis in Mexico with a series

Addressing and opening the dialogue on the climate crisis that affects the world and specifically Mexico City is the objective of the second season of the docuseries The topicled by Mexican actor Gael García Bernal.

The interpreter, known for his climate activism and criticism of the environmental policy of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, spoke in an interview with EFE about the new chapters of the series, which are already available on YouTube.

“It is a kind of reflection of what the first season was, which was with six main themes that are water, energy, mobility, food, waste and air,” he said at the Cineteca Nacional in Mexico City.

For Gael, addressing these issues with these documentaries, which last between 10 and 11 minutes, is important because they are “clear, strong, hard” and complex problems that are often difficult to accept and participate in changing.

“Sometimes we think that this contradicts free will, it contradicts joy, it even contradicts freedom, and therefore, politically, it is still difficult for it to be articulated as a solid movement around these issues,” he explained.

An urgent discussion

However, the artist accepted that this type of docuseries has helped to open the conversation, even on such sensitive issues as overpopulation and the actions that people can take about it.

“These are complicated, difficult issues, there is no answer and there are many questions about it and there should be more questions about it, let’s say forceful and elementary,” he asserted.

In addition, he explained that there are problems that only need political will to resolve and that is where society must push for these solutions to occur.

For example, he cited, the air chapter talks about the Tula refinery, which causes 50 percent of the air pollution that exists in Mexico City and that, if it were fixed, half of the pollution problems would be solved. in the Mexican capital.

“In other words, the solution is very clear, we have to fix it. We have to come to an agreement as a society to encourage politicians to do things,” she said.

That is why the new season of The topic explores different aspects of Mexico City, in which problems from other regions of the country and the world are reflected.

The shorts are located in different spaces of Mexico City in which some of the main problems of the climate crisis are focused, but there are also some solutions, from the communities and their relations with the environment.

For García Bernal, participating in this project is a reflection of his activism, since he considers that it is necessary for well-known figures like him to contribute and support causes common to society.

“The actors, in that sense, because in some way we are also interpreters of something collective. So, I think that through my eyes many people can see something, also what they themselves are thinking, “she pointed out.

The topic It debuted just a few days ago at the Morelia International Film Festival and is now available on the YouTube channel of La Corriente del Golfo, the series’ production house, as well as on its website.
