Criticism of ‘The House of the Dragon’ Chapter 1: An exciting prequel that starts strong

How can a new TV series continue the legacy of Game of Thrones without continuing his story or following his characters? The Targaryen family has ruled Westeros for a century, after their ability to ride dragons made it easy for them to conquer the Seven Kingdoms, but what will become of that dynasty when the question of who should rule next remains unanswered?

This circumstance looms over the series, and it’s exciting to see how it exposes the web of loyalties and rivalries at the heart of its upcoming conflict. This is largely because the political becomes very, very personal. Two brothers who desperately want to love each other can’t help but hurt each other at every turn. A daughter yearns for her father’s respect after he has spent years ignoring her and expecting a child, but the chasm between them proves difficult to bridge. Two friends, as young women born into a political landscape, are told they have to be pawns in larger power plays.

One of them accepts her role, while the other resists, and they are separated. These descriptions of key relationships are simplifications, but as in the best character dramas, things are and are not that simple.
