Pop music star Demi Lovato said that she goes back to using the pronoun “she” (she/herin English) after asking last year to be addressed with the neutral “elle” (they/them).
Lovato, 29, announced the change during an interview for the weekly Spout Podcast which aired on Monday.
“I am a very fluid person when it comes to my gender, my sexuality, my music, my creativity,” he assured in the podcast that began with a discussion of his sound evolution.
The singer and former Disney star is promoting the release of her eighth album on August 19, which she described as a return to more traditional rock ‘n’ roll.
Using the pronoun “elle” last year was appropriate for the way she was feeling at the time, Lovato told host Tamara Dhia.
“Last year, my energy was balanced between my masculine and feminine energy”he said during the podcast.
At the time, she said she didn’t feel comfortable going to binary toilets (men only or women only).
“I felt like a human being,” he said. “And that’s what ‘elle’ is all about for me. It’s about feeling human at your core,” she added.
“Recently,” she said, “I’ve been feeling more feminine, so I’ve adopted [el pronombre ‘ella’] again”.
On the social network Instagram, Lovato introduces herself with the pronouns “elle”/”ella”.
Lovato said the pronouns are meant to reflect the fluidity of contemporary identities. People who try to use them correctly, even if they don’t always succeed, shouldn’t feel bad about it, the singer said.
“It’s all about respect. Nobody is perfect,” she stated.
