Third heat wave Not only has it caused sweltering temperatures and temperatures above 30 degrees in most of Mexico, but it is also already causing side effects such as a shortage of ice at various points of sale in the Republic. What many ask is when will the heat start to drop and then we tell you.
The engineer Alberto Hernandez Unzonmeteorologist of Formula Group, announced that the third heat wave will begin to weaken in the center of the country and the maximum temperatures will drop below 30 degrees; apart from the fact that the first cyclones of the season are already expected for the Pacific Ocean, which will further weaken the anticyclonic system that ‘scorches’ most of the country.
When will the heat begin to drop, according to experts?
Although the third heat wave will end, it is not the last one that is expected: the Institute of Science of the Atmosphere and Climate Change (ICA and CC) predicted that a a new heat wave will affect the Mexican territory from July 1although it is unknown if it will have the same impact and duration as the current one, according to information published in the UNAM Gazette.
According to the historical records of the National Meteorological Service (SMN), between 2018 and 2022, the national average high temperature never fell below 33 degrees during the month of July; except for 2021, when it was 31.8 degrees. Let’s remember that in July there is already summer and another phenomenon known as the heat wave.
The heatwave 2023 It is a period of 40 days (between the months of July and August), where the temperatures increase and the rains decrease in intensity; In general, it affects the states located in the northeast, east and southeast of Mexico, such as: Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Veracruz, Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.
Average maximum temperatures nationwide during 2022*:
- July: 33.3 degrees.
- August: 32.1 degrees.
- September: 30.4 degrees.
- October: 29.1 degrees.
* According to SMN data
According to the SMN records, the following months will still be hot… although this can vary according to the state and climate, for example, Mexico City has an average maximum temperature of 25.6 degrees in July; but in Sonora, where it is a desert climate, the average is 37.1 degrees.
Will the heat end until winter and with the cold fronts?
If the SMN record on maximum temperatures is taken into account, until the month of December the average maximum temperature nationwide drops to 24 degrees; although this did not happen in 2021, when it was 26.7 degrees. added to the fact that the minimums can reach a ‘refreshing’ 16 degrees… but that is only an average, since they can drop more due to the cold fronts.
But if the average of the minimum temperatures recorded in the country is taken into account? According to the SMN, from the month of September, the nights stop being so hot and reach an average of 18 degrees nationwide, which coincides with the peak of the hurricane season and through the arrival of fall.
The National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) recommends that people not sunbathe between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., as well as drink plenty of fluids (especially water) to avoid heat stroke; remember that the heat wave says goodbye, but other phenomena will keep temperatures high.
