As you know, Netflix premiered last Wednesday, August 3, the docuseries ‘Clusterf**k: Woodstock ’99’. The documentary includes interviews with witnesses who were at the concerts for the three days. When James Hetfield’s gang and Axl Rose’s gang arrived at Montréal, Canada on August 8, 1992, both the attendees and the members of the two bands expected an amazing show. And the feeling that remained was of a real disaster.
Metallica was headlining and the first to act. When the band from San Francisco were performing “Fade to Black”Hetfield was injured due to fireworks, having both second and third degree burns. When Lars Ulrich’s band finished playing, the 59-year-old ipso facto went to the hospital. This meant that Guns N’ Roses fans had to wait another two hours to enjoy the magic of Californians live.
Notably Axl Rose had confessed that his vocal cords were sore at the beginning of the tour. For this reason, the vocalist had to finish the performance before time and commented that “it would be our last concert in a long time”. Obviously, you don’t like to be given that news having finished the show early, and having endured a few hours to see them. Hence the fans were quite angry.
For this reason, the supporters destroyed many parts of the Olympic Stadium, and as it did not mean little to them, they began to flipping over a police car, robbing people, breaking windows until finally everything started to burn. They opened fire because the police showed up with a disturbance in order to stop the crowd. These riots reached nearly half a million dollars in damage. Black Sabbath in Milwaukee (1980)
The British heavy metal band was in full swing on tour “Heaven and Hell” in the United States. They could only rest for three songs until Geezer Butler was hit (I don’t really know what it was, but I guess it was a bottle) thrown from the audience.
“I think he was doing the intro to “NIB” and I heard the noise of something hitting the stage. Then I got hit on the head. I left the stage because I was bleeding badly. Things went awry when our band manager told the crowd that Sabbath was not coming back on stage. Everybody attendees began to reveal themselves breaking windows…Butler remembers.
About 160 people were arrested and many of the spectators ended up in hospital. Iron Maiden in New Jersey (1987)
March 28, 1987the band was putting the finishing touch to their concert playing “Running Free”. Attendees at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey rallied. Chaos took over the night with people throwing bottles, firecrackers, And a long etcetera.
“Everyone drinking, with the music blaring, and breaking bottles. It was a tremendous mess. The bottles were everywhere, glass on the floor, and the most unpleasant thing was seeing bloody handkerchiefs. Two cars that were in the parking lot they were overturned and set on fire, while others had their windows smashed in. When police arrived they took around 30 people to the police station amid the chaos, and the Meadowlands Arena soon after banned the sale of alcohol at concerts.
Guns N’ Roses in St. Louis (1991)
In 1991 at the Riverport Amphitheater just before they started playing “RocketQueen”Axl Rose saw a cameraman in the audience and was transformed. He was annoyed that that photographer was there because he started yelling at the security: “Catch that guy!“. The vocalist decided that until the photographer was removed from the room, he would not act. Rose decided to take this worker out of the public. After taking the camera from him, the man from Indiana returned to the stage and stated: “thanks to fucking security“, and then left the amphitheater. The members of Guns N’ Roses followed him, causing him to get involved in the public.
Rage Against the Machine in Los Angeles (2000)
no wonder that Rage Against the Machine will cause an altercation. In the year 2000, the group was at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, coinciding with the celebration of the Democratic National Convention. More than 8,000 fans attended the concert, with Rage criticizing politics: “Our democracy has been hijacked. “Our electoral freedoms in this country are over as long as it is controlled by congressmen. We are not going to allow these streets to be taken over by Democrats or Republicans.”“.
After a brief 40-minute performance, the band’s followers began to speak out throwing bottles and stones at the police, who were prepared in riot gear.
Metallica in Santiago, Chile (2010)
