Venezuelan musician Alex Moreno will give a concert in Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center

Since he was a child, Alex Moreno discovered that he was passionate about communicating through music.

Growing up in Venezuela, he recalls that his mother often played traditional Venezuelan music in the house. Over the years, Moreno immersed himself in music, joining the college choir and developing different skills playing different instruments, including the Venezuelan cuatro, piano, and guitar.

“But later, I discovered the magic that the human voice can do when listening to the voice of Plácido Domingo,” Moreno told AL DÍA in an interview. “At that moment, I knew I wanted to explore that world.”

The Spanish-born opera singer and director became one of Moreno’s greatest musical influences, along with the prolific great Venezuelan composer and singer Simón Díaz, and the noted American musician Frank Sinatra.

During his time in Venezuela, Moreno honed his musical skills in general, devoting himself to operatic singing, acting, and theater directing. He even created his own band, “3 y Cuatro”, whose first album, “Que si”, was pre-nominated for a 2018 Latin Grammy.

Moreno describes his musical style as “eclectic, but classic”.

As a fan of everything from Latin American rhythms to American musical standards, and everything in between, Moreno tries to blend the two worlds together.

His performances are often bilingual.

“Some songs are in English, others in Spanish [y] some songs, I mix the two languages,” said Moreno.

“Good music comes from everywhere, in all languages and with many influences,” he added.

On Saturday, September 17, Moreno will perform at the Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center for a concert titled “Latin Romance in Concert.”

He describes his next concert as a cross between Latin American romantic music and world music.

“It will be a celebration of the integration of cultures,” Moreno said of the upcoming concert. “Hispanics, Americans and people of all nationalities are welcome to listen to this music that can take us all over the continent.”

For Moreno, the two most important elements when putting on a concert are discovering the concept and connecting it with the inspiration behind it.

The next concert marks the return of Moreno in collaboration with Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center.

In December 2020, he offered a virtual concert that also served as a fundraising gala for the benefit of Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.

“Even though it was streaming, it brought the house crashing down! We’re thrilled that audiences will be able to experience this full concert live on our Mainstage,” Uptown CEO April Evans said in a statement. press.

When asked what he looks forward to the most, Moreno says it’s the way the performances will make people feel.

“To see how happy everyone is to hear the music that me and my band make for them, and above all to celebrate Hispanic Heritage in a place like Uptown! Knauer Center,” he said.

The concert will take place on Saturday, September 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Uptown A. Roy Smith Mainstage, located at 226 N. High Street in West Chester, Pa.

Tickets for Moreno’s “Latin Romance in Concert” are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
