The November 10, 1928 the great composer was born in Rome Ennio Morriconecreator of some of the most popular film soundtracks, with true masterpieces such as those of “The Mission”, “Elliott Ness’s Untouchables”, “Cinema Paradiso” or the award-winning “The Hateful Eight”but especially recognized is his contribution to the western genre in the company of the director Serge Leonewith the “dollar trilogy” as the banner and one composition in particular winning the hearts of metal fans around the world thanks to Metallica: “The Ecstasy of Gold”theme that opens the concerts of those from San Francisco since the times in which they were still next to the longed-for manager Jon Zazula.

It was precisely the manager, founder of Megaforce Records and promoter of great heavy metal bands, the person responsible for “The Ecstasy of Gold” being forever linked to the history of Metallica, as the singer and guitarist commented a few years ago James Hetfield in a meeting with fans in the Californian Lark Theater of Larkspurduring the Mill Valley Film Festival from 2014.

James recalls how the figure of Clint Eastwood was key for him in his childhood: “I don’t remember the first time I saw her. I became a fan of Clint Eastwood at a very young age. (His character) He was one of the first on-screen mentors I wanted to emulate. In fact, I identified with each person. of the film: the ugly, the good and the bad. Without going too deep, metaphorically, we all have that in us, we all have the potential to be each one of them.”

Hetfield remembered how Zazula was the one who wanted to replace the introduction that the band used in their first concerts: “That really terrible intro tape was just a beating heart and it just got faster and faster and faster. That was one of the coolest things our first manager ever did. That was pretty much the only thing we took away from him as far as tips”.

The manager himself explained to Loudwire how he decided on the composition of Morricone: “I’ve always been a huge fan of Morricone, and I was looking for an intro song to play before Metallica hit the stage, something emotional to get the audience ready.”

Zazula assured that he was considering another theme from the same film that could have been chosen: “I was shuffling “The Trios” for the fiery trumpets at the end of the song, but “The Ecstasy of Gold” won.

In 2007 Metallica participated with their own version of “The Ecstasy of Gold” on the album “We All Love Ennio Morricone”.
