The Pirate and his Band: The day Glam Rock was born

Witnessing the birth of a rock star has to be at least a unique moment. I was telling you The pirate this morning. There is a British broadcaster, a mythical guy in England called BobHarris, and who saw the rise of Marc Bolan, the leader of t.rex At the top

the british broadcaster Bob Harris remembers the moment when he witnessed Marc Bolan become a star in 1971. The communicator was touring the UK with T. Rex in the first months of the year, and that’s how he remembered it: The first concert was in Portsmouth Guildhall. “The band finished their set and we were hanging out. We noticed that there was a lot of noise in the street: the whole audience was around the backstairs door.ge.” And not only that, Harris recalled that the fans were like, the “The place was surrounded by girls with scissors trying to remove strands of Marc’s hair. What I remember is a lot of flickering stainless steel at eye level. It was crazy”. Bolan was rising like foam. More and more people became addicted to his music and style, and the phenomenon was further intensified when he made his iconic appearance on the BBC’s Top of the Pops programme, wearing, as the Pirate reminded you, glitter on his face and kicking off the glam-rock movement.

“People were not prepared for Marc”, said producer Tony Visconti, and “everyone was growing a beard. The musicians tried to distance themselves from that bland image. People were seen at Top of the Pops with beards, wearing jeans and flannel shirts. Then Marc came.”. Visconti noted that Bolan “was very handsome. But he was cheeky. He dressed up to be a rock star. He didn’t do these things when I met him, but he had probably been working this in the mirror.”

And if during the history of rock T.Rex were great, imagine Kiss. But of course, not everything has been a bed of roses, far from it. Back in January 1973 they gave their first concert, but in order to get hired, the Gene Simmons called posing as someone recommending the hiring of Wicked Lester, (come on, Kiss, only that’s what they were called before) at the Popcorn Club in New York. “We didn’t have a manager, so I called the guy directly. You’re not going to believe this band, Wicked Lester. They make original material and if you want, they’ll play you a W song.Ilson Pickett or Otis Redding. Over the phone, I sold him the band for $35. It didn’t matter that getting the truck to move our equipment and all of that was going to cost more. We just wanted to show our muscles.” 35 dollars and now, as the Pirate told, they pocket more than 1 million dollars per show.
