“The corn of my people” shows in Miami the cultural diversity of Mexico – Hola News

Miami, Nov 10 (EFE) .- The Miami Beach New World Symphony Orchestra will present this Saturday a special event of music, dance and visual art entitled “The corn of my people” and dedicated to the cultural diversity of Mexico.

The renowned Mexican flutist Horacio Franco will be the guest of the musicians of the orchestra who have created a show whose title is due to the Mayan cosmogony.

Director Ho-Yin Kwok will lead a musical program that includes compositions by Mexicans Arturo Márquez (1950), Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940), Carlos Chávez (1899-1975), Federico Ibarra (1946), Samuel Murillo ( 1982), Ricardo Castro (1864-1907), Juventino Rosas (1864-1894) and Blas Galindo (1910-1993).

In addition to musical pieces, including mariachi music and popular song classics such as La llorona, the program includes declamations, videos on Mayan art and current Mexican art, as well as dance.

The Academy of American Orchestras and the Consulate General of Mexico in Miami have also participated in the project “El Maíz de mi Gente” and the special performance of the renowned Mexican flutist Horacio Franco.

The common thread of the program is the creation story according to the Mayan texts and how the gods created the man of corn and then the woman of corn, after the man of clay, the man of stone and the man of wood they could not survive the dangers and obstacles of nature.

“El Maíz de mi Gente” is the fruit of a special friendship between three New World Symphony musicians, Mexican-American violin scholars James Zabawa-Martínez and Luis Salazar, and librarian Julia Karstens, familiar with Mexican culture through having been raised in San Diego, California.

The trio proposed to produce a concert to welcome new audiences to the New World Center and provide a glimpse into the variety of visual and musical arts that Mexico has to offer.

“These three unique perspectives have led to the creation of ‘El Maíz de mi Gente’, a multimedia experience that seeks to celebrate the similarities and differences between all of us as humans,” underlines a statement from the production.
