The band that Dave Mustaine praises and admires | Metal Circus

He was born as an admiration and an inspiration in his beginnings with Metallica, both for him and for the rest of the band, who came to cover several of his songs. Over the years, the admiration became mutual, and a friendship was born between Mustaine and the guitarist in the band he praises.

A new video from the YouTube channel of SiriusXM revealed some interesting statements from Dave Mustaine last September in Liquid Metalin which he talked about the impact of a particular band on his career as an artist.

The great influence of Diamond Head

According to the leader of megadeththe legends of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Diamondhead -and his guitarist Brian Tatler-, had a great impact on his artistic development: “Diamond Head were probably one of the most influential bands in the NWBHM, just because they were in the right place at the right time.

I think they had a great singer and the guitar riffs were great. The press went further and said that they were the heirs of Led Zeppelin, which was a great compliment to Diamond Head. Back then, when I first heard them, it came because of my previous band, Metallica, the drummer Lars Ulrich, who toured with Diamond Head, was a huge fan and followed them. I got to know them on a different level, as peers, or as established musicians. I had an occasion to speak face to face with Brian Tatler, the guitarist of Diamondhead. He was a good guy, and a tremendous talent on guitar.”

Mustaine not only shared how he first heard of the band and how he got to know them in person, but also specified what he likes most about them: “The Diamond Heads I know and love are the ones from the beginning. And a lot of those songs we played with Metallica: ‘Helpless’, ‘The Prince’, ‘Am I Evil?’… And a lot of people think they’re Metallica originals, but they’re Diamond Head songs.” That passion shared with his former Metallica colleagues for Diamond Head led them to create their own particular sound tributes to the band, which became popular among their repertoire.

a mutual admiration

Diamond Head’s influence on Mustaine had only just begun at the time he recounts, as he adds that the band had a “huge influence” on both his career with Metallica and Megadeth, especially at the hands of the aforementioned guitarist, Brian Tatler. For his part, Tatler himself showed a big thank you to Metallica for their tributes to the band and helping keep it in the limelight.

In fact, Tatler spoke in an interview a few years ago with “Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon” in which he commented on the subject, and even mentioned a common project with Mustaine that they have half. According to Tatler, they got in touch in 1997 to form a project together, for which they composed some material for a year. However, the busy career of Dave Mustaine At that time, it stopped the progress of the project. Finally, he had to stay in the air due to lack of time.

However, their friendship continued over the years, and they even shared the stage with their respective bands in 2005, a way to keep that relationship alive and to make up to Tatler for not being able to reciprocate on the project that could never be due to the Dave Mustaine obligations. The friendship continued over the years, and in 2017 Diamond Head signed with Thrashville Management, the company founded by Mustaine and his son Justis. However, a few months later, the band moved to Siren Artist Management. Despite the abrupt change, in 2019 bassist Dean Ashton assured that it was a great experience working with Dave and his son, despite the fact that it did not work out to the disappointment of both parties.
