On January 15, the new Regulation of the General Law for Tobacco Control in Mexicowhich from now on prohibits displaying these products and use tobacco in public spaces to avoid exposing minors to these substances.

One of the main rules in said Regulation is that any form is prohibited advertising and promotion of tobacco products, including its display at points of sale; Another of them is the extension of the protection against smoke and the emissions of any tobacco and nicotine product.

Among the provisions mentioned are spaces free of tobacco smoke, which are normally very crowded, such as restaurants, bars, offices, stadiums, beaches, amusement parks, shopping malls, terraces, to name just a few. For this new regulation, the prohibition will apply even if the site is at the fresh air.

It is precisely in this category that the concertsso from now on it will no longer be possible light a cigarette or vape in the middle of the crowd at a festival, or move to other areas to smoke. The penalty fee for violating this Law it can go from 10 thousand pesos or even be arrested. The time would be determined in accordance with what is stipulated in article 427 of the General Health Law.

These are the places where smoking or vaping will not be allowed, according to the new health regulation, which are considered collective concurrence”:

-Work centers

-Schools

-Commercial places

-Hotels

-Stadiums

-Public transport (whereabouts)

-Restaurant (areas for smokers will be prohibited)

-Show centers

– Small spaces such as terraces, balconies, sports, parking lots, markets and more

-Parks, amusement centers, campuses (outside and inside)

In addition, the federal authorities indicated that the rules should be applied up to public areas of prison and detention centers.

In the Mexico Cityother tourist sites were added where tobacco consumption will also be restricted as of January 2023:

-Zocalo of the city of mexico.

-Plaza de la Mexicanidad.

-Manuel Gamio Square.

-Seminary Square.

-Cobblestone.

-Plaza of the Historical Center.

-Francisco I. Madero Street or Madero Pedestrian Corridor.

-Los Portales, between 20 de Noviembre avenue and José María Pino Suárez street.

-The Portals of the Old City Hall.

-The Portals of Av. 16 de Septiembre.

-November 20th Street.

Main purpose of the General Law for Tobacco Control

According to official data provided by the National Commission against Addictions (CONADIC), this Law seeks the following objectives:

-Protect the health of the population from the harmful effects of tobacco

-Protect the rights of non-smokers to live and coexist in spaces that are 100% free of tobacco smoke

-Establish the bases for the protection against tobacco smoke

-Establish the bases for the production, labeling, packaging, promotion, advertising, sponsorship, distribution, sale, consumption and use of tobacco products

-Institute measures to reduce tobacco consumption, particularly among minors

-Promote promotion, health education, as well as the dissemination of knowledge of the risks attributable to consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke

-Establish the general guidelines for the design and evaluation of legislation and public policies based on evidence against smoking

-Establish the general guidelines for the delivery and dissemination of information on tobacco products and their emissions
