That’s how “funny” their first concerts were: Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, AC/DC, Kiss…

We always say that the human being learns based on success and error, right? The same goes for concerts by Metallica, Guns N’ Roses and company. Now they are incredible shows with fire, the best instruments, the best acoustics on the biggest stages… But all that has a beginning. And what a start!

Metallica – 1982

When we talk about the men in black we like to highlight how underrated James Hetfield is as a guitar player. Well, in the first show they gave, he came up without a guitar because he was “uncomfortable and nervous”. But everything got worse: During the first song, Dave [Mustaine] broke a rope It seemed like it took forever to change it and I was standing there really embarrassed. She let us down so much afterwards.”

Guns N’ Roses – 1985

The place don’t think it was a sleazy Los Angeles lounge, but Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff and Steven Adler debuted at the Troubadour. After playing, their car stopped working forever, they had to hitchhike 40 hours until they found out that the tour had been canceled and that they were going to charge a fifth of what was promised. Everything’s fine.

Kiss-1973

See that Kiss has played in the most brutal places in the world, before thousands of people, but his first concert was before less than 10 people at the Popcorn Club in Queens. The first manager quit because he said the concert was “the worst shit i’ve ever heard”.

AC/DC – 1973

The band had only been together a couple of months, in fact they didn’t have enough songs for all the time they had to fill. But it was not a bad concert at all, as the bassist at the time, Dave Evans, recalled: “It had been very glamorous in the ’50s and ’60s, but when we played there it was way past its heyday. It was a small venue with a small stage, no dressing room.” The best anecdote of the show is the manager of the venue disconnected them every 20 minutes, more or less, because he thought they were playing too loud. And it was only the beginning…

In any case, Angus have a good memory of that night: “That concert was really wild. It’s wild on New Year’s Eve anyway.”
