Star Wars at the Teatro Colón: how is the symphonic concert where the Jedi battle against the empire of Darth Vader

“Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in Concert”

The lobby and the hall of the Teatro Colón have been invaded by a brigade of stormtroopers, the fearsome assault troop of the Galactic Empire commanded by the equally dark Darth Vader. They are not alone: to confront them, a group of Jedi arrives down the central corridor with their green and blue sabers. Fortunately, everything is threatened and the facilities of the Teatro Colón do not suffer the consequences of a Star Wars that has been going on for 45 years and (luckily) does not seem to have an end. Rather, quite the opposite: it is the unbeatable setting to witness a fascinating concert both for fans of the saga starwars as for lovers of symphonic music. Because what was presented on the night of Monday, July 11, was the general rehearsal for the press and the public of a show as simple as it was magnificent: the screening of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back with its soundtrack performed on stage by the Stable Orchestra of the Teatro Colón directed by the teacher Thiago Tiberius. A highly recommended experience for people of all ages.

Of course, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in Concert includes the megahit The Imperial Marchwritten, like the complete soundtrack of the film, by the Oscar winner, John Williams. And it is a matter of those first bars starting to sound there to, once again, verify that no amplified sound system, no matter how developed and technologically advanced it may be, can compare with the physical sensation that is experienced when an orchestra of masters performs play their instruments on a stage like the Colón.

It is not the first time that a show of this type has been presented at the Theater: the first edition of Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert was a success in February 2020. More than two years and a pandemic later, Disney and the Teatro Colón come together again for a new visual and musical show that pays tribute to this iconic film that, despite its more than 40 years in different formats and screens, it does not stop generating new fans. For this reason, the stalls and boxes of the Colón were filled and will surely be filled again with boys and girls, adolescents and kidults willing to see for the umpteenth time this part of history created by george lucas.

Briefly: Theatrically released on May 21, 1980, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is the fifth episode of the saga, and continues the escalation of the battle between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance, while the evil Darth Vader continues his relentless search for Luke Skywalker. But beyond the story and the incredible survival of fantastic special effects achieved more than four decades ago, what this show offers is a truly impressive visual and – above all – sound experience: the music of starwars performed live by such an orchestra on the stage of one of the best theaters for sheet music in the world, it is colossal. And it is, truly, a unique opportunity for an audience not used to Columbus to discover its beauty and magnificence.

It is known: since the premiere of the first film, in 1977, the saga of starwars has had a far-reaching impact on both Western cinema and culture, inspiring audiences around the world with its mythical storytelling and magnetic characters, groundbreaking special effects and, of course, unforgettable soundtracks. Because the music of Star Wars is as iconic and pivotal as any of its characters. That has its explanation: John Williamsits legendary composer, is not only the creator of the soundtrack for the nine films in the saga – with his first composition, for Star Wars, a new hope, won the Oscar for best original soundtrack–; Throughout his more than 60-year career, Williams managed to become one of the most successful composers in Hollywood, responsible for what is heard on Harry Potter, Superman, My poor little angel, Jaws, ET, Indiana Jones, Jurasic Park and more.

For his part, the director in charge of this bet is not an improvised one either. The young Portuguese-Brazilian Thiago Tiberius He is a specialist in live musical synchronization with films, and conducted orchestras in soundtrack recording studios for most of his career. Beyond being recognized as a composer, Tiberio has organized, orchestrated and directed concert adaptations of a large number and variety of films: The Hunger Games, Cinema Paradiso, The Goonies, Coraline, Bridget Jones’ Diary, Grease… He has won an Emmy, was the first Western orchestral master to conduct at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, with La La Land in Concertand directed the premiere of Star Wars Live in Concert in France, Portugal and Brazil. And far from the formality and pomp of the classic environment of a room like the Colón, Tiberio allows himself to joke with the public and the musicians, and even play at being guarded by the stormtrupers to go on stage. In fact, he threatens to use a lightsaber as a baton. Judging by his smiles throughout the concert, the members of the Teatro Colón Stable Orchestra also seem to enjoy both the repertoire and the director’s work.
