Rock in Río pays homage to its historic 1985 edition

Rio de Janeiro, September 9. Rock in Rio, with a concert in which old and new singers and Brazilian groups participated, paid tribute this Friday to its historic 1985 edition in Rio de Janeiro, the first of the 21 festivals, which concluded with a special performance from “Love of my life” by Queen.

The organization of the festival invited Brazilian artists who participated in the initial edition, such as the group Blitz and the singers Alceu Valenca, Ivans Lins, Pepeu Gomes and Elva Ramalho, to try to recreate the atmosphere of Rock in Rio 1985 with the hits of the time in the so-called “The Tribute”.

But the tribute was complemented by popular groups of today and that were not born at the time, such as the rapper Xama and the singers Liniker and Luisa Sonza, who have already performed at Rock in Rio, and received the mission of offering their particular contributions to songs from almost four decades ago.

The 1985 edition is considered historic because, in addition to being the first, it was the one that attracted the most public, with nearly 1.4 million spectators in 10 days of concerts.

The formats of the current editions provide for 7 days of concerts for a total audience of 700,000 spectators.

The first edition of the festival featured groups like Whitesnake, Iron Maiden, Nina Gagen, The Go-Go’s, Al Jarreau, James Taylor, Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, Rod Stewart, Yes, AC/DC and George Benson.

In 1985, in addition, there were concerts that are considered historic, such as the one offered by Queen, with a Freddie Mercury who stole all the attention and who performed “Love of my life” supported by thousands of voices.

The concert in tribute to the 1985 edition concluded precisely with the singer Luisa Sonza and the guitarist Andreas Kisser, leader of the Brazilian heavy rock group Sepultura, performing their own version of the same song.

The same was done on Thursday by the Italian band Maneskin, who also sang the same song to thank the invitation they received to perform at what is considered the largest music festival in the world.

The new edition of Rock in Rio, the twenty-first in its history and the ninth in the Brazilian city where it was born in 1985, arrived this Friday at the fifth of seven days. The festival organized concerts for September 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10 and 11.

Rock in Rio has also had editions in Lisbon, Madrid and Las Vegas.

Concerts by bands such as Iron Maiden, Coldplay, Greenday, Guns N’ Roses, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Gilberto Gil, Dua Lipa, Post Malone, Fall out boy, Camila Cabello and Avril Lavigne were scheduled for this year’s event. EFE
