Mexican politician and founder of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) Porfirio Muñoz Ledo died at the age of 89.

We worked together from the opposition, at the head of @AccionNacional and @PRDMexico respectively in the Constitutional Reform that made the transition to democracy possible through the creation of the IFE now independent @INE and the regulation of campaigns. Rest in peace,” lamented former President Felipe Calderón.
In his last years, Muñoz Ledo did not hold public office, but he was a deputy for Morena from 2018 to 2021.
President Andres Manuel López Obrador regretted his death and he highlighted the friendship and camaraderie he had with the founder of the PRD.
“I regret the death of Porfirio Muñoz Ledo, with whom I had coincidences for a long time. The recent discrepancies do not erase the good and long moments of friendship and camaraderie, much less his political legacy. I hug his family and friends,” AMLO said in his social networks.
In December last year, the former congressman criticized AMLO’s Plan B, calling it a “coup in Mexico” and even asked the senators not to approve it.
Who was Porfirio Muñoz Ledo?
Porfirio Muñoz Ledo was a historical mexican politician who was born in 1933 in the then Federal District (DF), because together with Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, a three-time candidate for the presidency of Mexico, they founded the PRD in 1989 after the departure of both PRI Institutional Revolutionary Party.
Muñoz Ledo was also a candidate for the government of Guanajuato in 1991 for the PRD, and in 2000 he ran as a standard-bearer for the presidency of the Republic for the Authentic Party of the Mexican Revolution (PARM).
In addition to being a PRI militant, he was also in the ranks of the PRD and Morena.
Counting his step as deputy of Morena, Muñoz Ledo had more than 70 years of experience in politics when he began as a press assistant for the Secretary of National Assets in the year 1950.
In his extensive administrative experience, he served as technical adviser to the Presidency of the Republic from 1960 to 1964, during part of the six-year term of Adolfo López Mateos.
In that same decade (1966-1970) he served as General Secretary of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and later as Secretary of Labor and Social Welfare (1972-1975).
During the PRI governments he was also Secretary of Public Education (1976-1977), advisor for Special Affairs to the President of the Republic (1977–1979), as well as national president of the PRI (1975-1976).
Porfirio Muñoz Ledo served as a senator, DF legislator and federal deputy, this being his last position with Morena from 2018 to 2021.
