Bassist, singer and founder of BUDGIE Burke Shelley He has died at the age of 71. His daughter Ela has confirmed the news with a brief statement on the Facebook page dedicated to the group.

Shelley died in her sleep at Heath Hospital in Cardiff, her hometown. The cause of death has not been reported.

Shelley founded BUDGIE in 1967 in Cardiff, Wales under the name of Hills Contemporary Grass, but after a few concerts they decided to change their name to BUDGIE.

Their self-titled debut was produced by BLACK SABBATH producer Rodger Bain and was released in 1971.

He recorded 10 albums with BUDGIE until “Deliver Us From Evil” in 1982, and five years later the band stopped playing live as well. Between 1995 and 1996 they offered some concerts, and in 1999 they definitively reformed again with Shelley at the helm. In 2006 they released their latest album “You’re All Living in Cuckooland” and in 2010 they stopped touring.

In the first albums of the group he also recorded keyboards and the mellotron.

Shelley He had already suffered an aortic aneurysm in 2010 for which he had to be operated on. The musician also suffered from Stickler syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects connective tissues, especially collagen. It can cause hearing loss, eye problems, facial abnormalities, etc.

The musician stated at the time that after the operation he found it difficult to sing and play the bass for a long time, although he continued to play the bass and do occasional backing vocals around South Wales in pop and rock cover bands.

Shelley declared in February of last year that he had refused further surgery on his aortic aneurysm for fear of being confined to a wheelchair. Apparently the first intervention damaged his diaphragm and prevented him from singing properly.

At that time he stated that at the age of 70 he preferred to live what remained as he was to spend his last years disabled. He also commented that he had material for an upcoming album that he intended to release.

BUDGIE They released their latest album titled “You’re All Living In Cuckooland” in November 2006.
