More clues about an imminent release of “TikTok Music” – Music Industry

According to reports, TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is moving towards launching a new music streaming service which would compete strongly with Spotify and YouTube Music.

Recently TechCrunch has discovered newly added references regarding a new “TikTok Music” service on streaming app Resso, also owned by ByteDance.

The code seems to suggest that user activity can be synced between the Resso app and TikTok Music, and it also specifically refers to a “music.tiktok.com” URL.

ByteDance already operates the music streaming service called Resso in markets including India, Brazil and Indonesia. But references to TikTok Music in the Resso app suggest the China-based company could sync user activity between the two apps. Additionally, the code references TikTok Music as part of TikTok.

It’s unclear if TikTok will trial its music service under the Resso name globally or release a separate app for it. The company also launched a site, «music.tiktok.com»for certain regions, references to which were also found in the code, suggesting the service may launch in Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Malaysia and Singapore first.

It still can’t be downloaded and if you try to click the download button you will get a popup saying “We are working hard to bring you the desktop version. Check back soon.” The mobile version of the site suggests that the download button will take users to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

The site’s terms of service also use the “TikTok Music” brand: “Welcome to TikTok Music! TikTok Music, one of our Services defined in the TikTok Terms, is a music streaming service that allows users to listen to music,” the terms page reads.

Many of the site’s pages have placeholder text indicating that the site is still under development. This could mean that ByteDance is preparing to start testing the service in certain territories.

The code references aren’t the only clues that a TikTok Music brand is in the works. The company also recently registered verified social media handles with the brand «TikTok Music» on Twitter and Instagram, as well as region-specific identifiers for areas like Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia, and countries like Singapore and Malaysia.

These accounts have posted similar creative teasers saying “Welcome to a new way to experience music,” “discover your new favorite song,” and “stay connected” between April and May.

These movements coincide with the information that a former employee of ByteDance he told TechCrunch earlier this year, according to which it had previously considered bringing the Resso service to more markets under the “TikTok Music” brand. More specifically, it had been weighing launches in mature markets like the UK and Australia.

Last month, The Wall Street Journal It also reported that ByteDance was in talks with notable music labels to expand its streaming service to global markets.

It seems that TikTok is trying to build an entire ecosystem where after its main app makes artists go viral, via Sound On can distribute their music to TikTok Musicin effect competing with current distribution companies, record labels and streaming platforms.
