Lali Espósito: “The music industry requires you to sound all the time and I needed to stop”

Her nickname was given to her by her brother, thirteen months older than her. Hence, her real name, Mariana, waits in the trunk to open to remember where she comes from, and that, above all, Lali, has created an eclectic hurricane between music and acting. «Lali was inevitably transformed into my name», she confesses in her interview with The Independent.

Then I was aware that it was my job and I had to take care of it as such,” says the actress and singer, who always had the perception that “this world” was not made for her. «I grew up in a neighborhood of humble and very hard-working people. There an unconscious thought is generated that public art spaces are for others and not for one».

But Argentina has managed to carve out a niche for itself in both industries, and even cross the pond. It has cost me a lot to get here, to make my music the way I like it. This album has been a creative process of time that I needed and that I have found in fiction. The music industry requires you to be playing all the time and sometimes that’s not what defines you. As a Latina, things have been demanded of me that I was not. I have reconnected with myself and I have managed to work with the sounds that represent me and that I like. I am very happy with the final product, it still has my essence, but mixed with something new.

Proof of this are the themes Discipline, Diva, Like you either N5, his latest single, the first installment of his new sound, a sound explosion with house overtones and full of energy that he even dares to mix with flamenco guitars and that he says, in Spain, has caught on «very well». «Spain allows an economic stability that no other country gives you and I think that together with Argentina they are a good tandem in music and also in fiction. Spain is a very pleasant place to make fiction and that has become an epicenter of Ibero-American cinema, but in music, it is a country that has safeguarded its culture even merging it with other styles, such as Rosalía or C. Tangana».
