“I didn’t feel so important in the band”: Ozzy Osbourne recalls his tense days with Black Sabbath

Ozzy Osbourne recalled the difficult relationship he had with Black Sabbath in the 80’snoting that he “didn’t feel as important in the band” as compared to his early solo days.

The “prince of darkness” has been active giving interviews about his most recent album, patient number 9which featured a number of guests, including Tony Iommihis former Black Sabbath partner.

In a chat with the specialized portal Stereogum, Ozzy recalled the group’s first meeting on the occasion of Live Aid in 1985, after his departure in 1979. “Well, they were managed by my father-in-law [Don Arden], and my father-in-law and my wife [Sharon] and I were in a fucking war. I was delivered [una demanda] at Live Aid for my father-in-law, for interference or some nonsense, and none of it ever materialized.”

“And I was drinking a lot of alcohol in those days, and I was bloated. It was not a great experience. It was more like ‘I’ll take revenge on them’, something like that. Or no, it wasn’t revenge. It was just the first time I had seen all of them since the breakup,” Osbourne recalled.

Of the performance itself, Ozzy recalled: “It wasn’t a life-shattering experience when I was like, ‘Fuck, why did I go in and get fired?’ and all this shit. It was only Sabbath. At that time, I also felt free, whereas with Sabbath I didn’t feel as important in the band. I used to feel like I was just a sideman on his show. I came with my own melodies and stuff, but I didn’t feel up to them, because I didn’t know how to play an instrument. But that was a long time ago, and when you start thinking about this shit now, it doesn’t seem necessary anymore, right?

But after several meetings, Ozzy and Tony Iommi’s relationship seems to be on the mend. In addition to his performance at Birmingham in August, Iommi guest-stars on two songs (Degradation Rules Y No Escape From Now) of Patient Number 9, Ozzy’s most recent solo album. “We just finished the Commonwealth Games together. It’s really nice to be friendly with someone who used to bully me.”Ozzy pointed out.
