How is Tomorrowland, the largest festival in the world

I am lucky to have been to several festivals in different parts of the world. Although each of them has its particularity, it is an experience that is usually similar: a large property, a line up extensive, two or more stages, attractions or games and many people. Thereforewhen attending tomorrowlandthe largest festival in the world, I could not imagine how different it could be from the experiences I had known. But after reading various articles and opinions I sensed that I was about to experience something exceptional. And, a few hours later, I checked.

The festival was born in Belgium in 2005 and each time it became bigger and more ambitious until it became a unique experience in the world. Boom, located about 20 kilometers from Brussels, is the name of the municipality that this year hosts over 600,000 people landing from 200 different countries. A town of 18,000 inhabitants that proudly opens its doors to an initiative that, over the years, has made it grow and improve its infrastructure.

This 2022 is back with its 16th edition – in 2020 an online edition was made – and revolves around “The reflection of love, which symbolizes the positive energy that the festival represents after the unexpected pandemic. At twelve noon, the gates of De Schorre park open and, little by little, thousands of people cross them ready to live one of the best musical experiences of their lives.

Tomorrowland: what is the place like and how long does it last

This year the festival redoubles its commitment and adds a third weekend: from July 15 to 17, from July 22 to 24 and from July 29 to 31. They all take place in the same property whose size is overwhelming: more than 30 hectares that are equivalent to 63 soccer fields. The place is so big and incredible that it is complex to explain. Surrounded by lakes and forests, the park unfolds 15 scenarios which are connected by different cement paths and some wooden bridges. Seen from above, it is very similar to a huge amusement park.

Although magnitude is one of the overwhelming factors, it is not the only one. Tomorrowland is not a festival, it is an experience. It is to enter a magical and incredible world in which, at every step you take, you find attractions of all kinds: a wheel that allows you to see the place from above, a post office to send a letter to the part of the world you want, hundreds of food tents and drinks with options for all tastes and even relaxation and rest spaces.

Tomorrowland: which artists play at the festival and how many stages are there

Without a doubt, the great protagonist is the music. An extensive curatorship of 800 artists ranging from the most renowned DJs – such as Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, Steve Aoki, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike – to the new promises of electronic music from different countries. This year has two great peculiarities: Hernán Cattaneo, the only Argentine DJ to be part of the festival, and the Belgian DJ, Charlotte de Witte will make history at Tomorrowland by becoming the first woman to close the Tomorrowland Main Stage.

The artists perform on 15 different stages and each one of them has a particularity: in the middle of a forest, in an underground corner, surrounded by a giant dragon that releases rose-scented smoke or in a micro-space where only 20 people enter.

One of the aspects that makes Tomorrowland stand out is its main stage. This year it is 270 meters long and 53 meters high and is made up of 6,500 unique pieces of art. It is the highest in its history. I’ve never seen anything like it and will probably never see it again. Not only is its size and magnitude astonishing, but also each of the details that make it up. In addition, when it gets dark, it becomes a show of lights and special effects like no other.

Tomorrowland: how much are the tickets and how to get them

As it happens every year, Tomorrowland tickets sell out in less than a day. Yes, 600,000 tickets sold in less than 24 hours. The way to get them is variable. Tickets can be purchased online on its official site or you can buy a complete package called Global Journey that includes flight, accommodation and admission to the festival.

Prices obviously vary according to the number of days and the experience chosen. An average daily ticket costs between 110 and 210 euros, the pass for the three days – Full Madness Pass – is between 260 and 540 euros and the complete weekend pack costs between 1,000 and 1,500 euros.

Tomorrowland: what is the accommodation like

Accommodation is an important issue to consider. The truth is that Boom is a fairly small town in which there is not much availability during the festival. With which, the options are: sleep in nearby cities such as Antwerp (17 km), Brussels (20 km) or Mechelen (14 km) or sleep in Dreamville, the city of Tomorrowland.

Dreamville is an incredible space that, like the festival, is made to enjoy a complete experience. It is located next to the property and offers the visitor not only a place to sleep but also restaurants of all kinds, hairdressers, yoga classes, gyms, jewelry stores and key items for the festival and meeting tents to make friends with the thousands of people who stay there. Within Dreamville there are different offers ranging from camping to private rooms that include breakfast.

Tomorrowland: key facts

  • The entrance to Tomorrowland is a wristband. It is very important to always wear it as it not only gives access to the property but is also used to pay. Through a ‘cashless’ system, the bracelet is charged before or during the festival. The interesting thing is that in Tomorrowland there is another currency called ‘pearls’. Each pearl is worth a little more than a euro and can be purchased by paying in cash or by card. This currency is used to buy food, drinks and/or merchandise

  • The minimum age to enter Tomorrowland is 18 years old. In general, anyone who is 18 years old or who will reach that age in the current year can enter. For example, this year all those who were born during or before 2004 could enter.
  • The festival has zero tolerance for drugs. It is forbidden to use, exchange or possess drugs within the festival and the campsite. In fact, there is a kind of bin at the entrance so that those who have any substance can leave it.
