Haifa Organ Recital Series – Aurora

It will feature the best organists in the world, who will come to Israel thanks to their personal relationship with conductor Yuval Rabin, bringing a vast repertoire, which spans the globe.

The old series under the musical direction of organist and musicologist Dr. Yuval Rabin opens at the end of the month the 11th season with a concert for organ and orchestra and together with pieces for solo organ. The director explains that the organ is the only musical instrument for which an original repertoire has been written for more than 600 years. He has scheduled a representation of this variety in the series of 9 recitals that will open with a festive and orchestral concert. The concerts will be held in the Auditorium of the Hecht Museum at the University of Haifa, on Fridays at 11:00. It opens on 28.10. More data: https://organ.org.il/

Joining Rabin will be a small chamber orchestra, including his twin daughters Gefen (violin) and Tchelet (cello) who will play with their father in the opening concert. The two, 14 years old, emigrated to Israel only two years ago and, despite the difficult time, managed to integrate well into the local music scene and even appeared as soloists with the most important orchestras in Israel having already accompanied Swiss orchestras since the 11 years

Dr. Rabin reports that the organ on which the concerts are held in Haifa was built by renowned Israeli organ builder Gideon Shamir and in fact merges two historic organs inside, originally built in the 19th century, which were dismantled , and received a new life in that room. Regarding the program, he informs that this year it will host the best organists in the world. Works by Johann Sebastian Bach will be performed, along with a recital dedicated to a line of composers from Bach to the American Bennett. It is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the composer César Franck in Belgium, but he is the father of the French romantic school. Both Italian music and works from the Wild West will be played.

Growing up in Haifa, the conductor was captivated by the sounds of the organ even in his youth, and when he received an exciting invitation from one of the great organ masters to study with him at the renowned music academy in Basel, Switzerland. A two-year stay turned into 22 years, during which he graduated with honors. He also tells us about the private organ he has in his home in Jerusalem and it is the only one in Israel that performs concerts in his living room. The price of this organ is one million shekels.

Regarding the organ in general, he reports that there are 50 in Israel, 6 of which are used for concerts. An organ is a large keyboard instrument, which is considered the largest in the world. Sound production is created by the passage of pressurized air (through a bellows) through flutes, similar to wind instruments. The material from which they are made and their mouthpieces are different and therefore different sounds are obtained. There is no standard organ and each organ is like an orchestra that is made up of different parts and requires the player to adapt to it.
