Guitarist Carlos Santana faints during a concert in the United States

Legendary guitarist Carlos Santana (Autlán de Navarro, Mexico, 1947) collapsed on Tuesday night during a concert in Clarkstone, a city north of Detroit (Michigan, USA). The 74-year-old musician was first treated onstage at the Pine Knob Theater and then rushed to a local hospital for heat stroke and dehydration. “He is fine,” Santana’s representative, Michael Vrionis, said in a statement, explaining that the artist will be under observation for the next few hours. Tour organizers have announced that the artist’s next date, planned for Wednesday in Pennsylvania, will be postponed to a date yet to be confirmed.

Images recorded by concertgoers and uploaded to social networks show the guitarist playing until he walks to the percussion stage to support himself. He sits on her and fades away. “It’s okay?”, says a man who recorded one of the videos. “She just passed out,” he adds. Members of the team sound the alert and enter the scene to help him. Santana did not lose consciousness as he was tended to by musicians and members of the production. They carried him off the stage on a stretcher from one side. As he left he greeted the audience, who did not stop applauding him.

“I’m fine,” the guitarist published hours later on their Facebook page. “I forgot to eat and drink water, so I got dehydrated and passed out,” summed up the artist, who is accompanied by his partner Cindy Blackman, the group’s drummer. Santana is immersed in the tour Miraculous Supernaturalwith dozens of scheduled dates, to promote his album of duets Blessings and Miracles (Blessings and Miracles), which intends to follow in the footsteps of his album Supernaturalwhich became a worldwide hit in the late 1990s.

Santana, therefore, has a frenetic pace of concerts. He kicked off the month of July with dates in St. Louis and Chicago’s Tinley Park, where he played on July 2. He had a short break on Sunday and Monday, July 4, where he instead participated in a concert organized by CNN for Independence Day. Also in the lineup were the Doobie Brothers, Avril Lavigne, Gloria Estefan, Machine Gun Kelly, Pitbull and The Lumineers, among others.

The tour Miraculous Supernatural, in which the band Earth, Wind & Fire also plays, was supposed to start in 2021, but was postponed to June 2022, with 30 stops throughout the United States. After this incident, Santana still has 19 pending appointments on the calendar, until the last concert, on August 27 in Tampa (Florida).

Received without much enthusiasm by critics, Blessings and Miracles repeats the formula of duets that led the guitarist born in Jalisco to sell 30 million copies in the twilight of the 20th century. Rob Thomas, the lead singer of Matchbox 20, who provided his voice for Smooth, appears again in the pop theme Mood. Other big-name guests help build many of the album’s 15 songs, number 36 in a career that began in 1969. These include Traffic and Blind Faith Briton Steve Winwood; country figure Chris Stapelton, Metálica guitarist Kirk Hammett and jazz legend Chick Corea, who passed away in February last year because of cancer.
