Grammy: Music with artificial intelligence is eligible for awards

Last month, the Recording Academy announced a series of changes to the rules of the Grammy awards to better reflect the evolution of the music industry. Of those recently instituted guidelines, protocols involving technological advances of artificial intelligence (AI) generated headlines like “Only human creators” they could win the highest honor in the music industry.

“A work that does not contain human authorship is not eligible in any category”point out the rules.

But as the music industry continues to embrace new AI technology, so is the Grammys, says Recording Academy CEO and President Harvey Mason Jr.

“This is the straightforward headline: AI, or music containing AI-created elements, is absolutely eligible to enter and be considered for a Grammy nomination. Spot”Mason told The Associated Press. “But what’s going to happen is we’re not going to give the AI portion a Grammy or a Grammy nomination.”

If a voice modeling program or AI performs lead vocals on a song, the track would be eligible in a songwriting category, for example, but not in a performance category, because “what is being interpreted is not human creation”Explain. “Conversely, if a song was sung by an actual human being in the studio, and they did all the acting, but the AI wrote the lyrics or track, the song would not be eligible in a songwriting category.”

“As long as humans contribute more than a minimal amount, which to us means a significant way, they are and always will be considered for a nomination or a win.”he continued. “We don’t want technology to replace human creativity. We want to make sure that technology enhances, beautifies, or adds to human creativity. That is why we take this particular position in this awards cycle.”

The Recording Academy has long considered AI-related rules amid the popularity of new songs created with the technology such as “Emin-AI-em” by David Guetta, AI compositions by TikTok user @ghostwriter977, Grimes’ voice modeling AI software.

To establish its AI guidelines, the Recording Academy conducted extensive research, including holding tech summits.

“I have met with the copyright office. We’ve talked about the future and what it looks like at the federal and legislative levels.” Mason said, adding that talks about AI “They really came to a head in the last six months.”

The Grammys’ new AI protocols were announced three days after Paul McCartney shared that the last recording of the Beatles it had been created using artificial intelligence to extract John Lennon’s voice from an old demo. Not knowing the scope of the technology, Mason could neither confirm nor deny whether he might be eligible for a Grammy nomination.

“We’ll see what it turns out to be”said. “But I would imagine, from the first descriptions I heard, that there would be components of the creation that would be absolutely eligible.”

So, Can Grammy viewers expect to see works created at least partially with AI nominated for an award as early as next year?

It is impossible to predict what will be sent. But as Mason claims, “People are using the technology. I imagine she’s going to be involved in a lot of records, a lot of songs this year, so we’ll see if some of them get nominated or not, but I’m sure there will be a few that show up.”

The 2024 Grammy Awards will return to the Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 4, and will be broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+ in the United States.
