Google sues Sonos for patent infringement – Music Industry

Google is suing sound for its voice control technology, claiming that it violates Google patents.

The lawsuit claims that Sonos’ voice control feature for its speakers infringes on seven patents related to Sonos Assistant technology. Google.

Sonos first introduced the new technology in May 2022. Following news of the lawsuit, Sonos chief legal officer, Eddie Lazarusissued a statement calling the new lawsuits an “intimidation tactic designed to retaliate against sound for speaking out against Google’s monopolistic practices, avoiding paying a fair royalty for approximately 200 patents.”

A Google spokesman told Reuters that Sonos “began an aggressive and deceptive campaign against our products at the expense of our shared customers.”

Google also filed a relevant complaint with the International Trade Commission (ITC).

According to the lawsuits, Google has made its Google Assistant software available to Sonos for years.

The lawsuits also say that the engineers at Google helped Sonos engineers implement speech recognition technology in Sonos devices.

Google is seeking an unspecified amount of money in damages, along with an order to block Sonos’ alleged infringement of Google patents.

Google says that the current speakers of sound infringe on a variety of its patents related to “enabling voice assistant technology and providing improvements in the efficiency, reliability, and durability of battery-powered, voice-controlled devices.”

Sonos executives have spoken in front of the US Congress about Google’s monopoly practices and antitrust problems.
