FIFA reveals World Cup party venues in different countries

ZURICH (AP) — Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach and Mexico City’s Plaza de la República are among six places around the globe that will host fan festivals during the World Cup in Qatar.

The Port of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the Anhangabaú Valley in Sao Paulo, as well as downtown areas that are home to nightclubs in London and Seoul complete the list of venues for official festivities where crowds of fans will be able to watch the matches and listen to music.

The organizers have also contracted electronic music events from Saudi Arabia and England to perform during the tournament.

The events will be open “only to consumers who are of legal drinking age” at the venues. The festivals are organized by FIFA and Ab InBev, which has sponsored the World Cup for years and produces numerous brands of beer, including Budweiser, Corona and Brahma.

Admission to some events will be free. In others it will be charged, FIFA said in a statement on Monday.

World soccer’s governing body also revealed more details of the music events to be held in Qatar during the World Cup, which starts on November 20 and ends on December 18.

The Aravia electronic music festival, organized by a Saudi entertainment organizer, will be held in a 5,500-capacity venue in Al Wakrah.

The Arcadia Spectacular event, with DJs under a metal structure in the shape of a giant spider that spews fire, has been the main attraction of the Glastonbury summer festival of music and culture in England. It will take place in a space for 15,000 spectators in Ras Bu Fontas, close to Doha International Airport and the Persian Gulf.

Neither the organizers of the World Cup in Qatar nor the promoters of the musical events gave details about the ticket prices for the shows.

The main venue for the fan festival to watch all 64 matches of the tournament will be Al Bidda Park, at the southern end of the Corniche seafront promenade.

Qatar has relaxed some restrictions on where and when alcohol can be consumed in the emirate. At fan parties and areas where the games are watched, AB InBev beers may be sold.
