Diego el Cigala released after complaint of mistreatment

MADRID.- A court in Madrid released the flamenco singer this Thursday Diego the Cigala one day after being arrested after receiving a complaint from bad treatments of his partner, to whom he will have to answer in a court in the south of the country.

“The Violence against Women court No. 7 of Madrid has agreed today (Thursday) to release Diego Ramón Jiménez Salazar, the artist’s full name, as there is no risk of flight,” the court said in a press release.

“The competent body to handle this case of alleged crime of continued mistreatment is the Jerez de la Frontera court, Andalusia (south), where the complaint was filed on Wednesday,” the statement detailed.

“The court in Jerez will be the one that decides the adoption of precautionary measures, if any,” he added.

El Cigala was arrested on Wednesday night in a hotel in Madrid, after his partner complained about alleged mistreatment that occurred regularly, a police spokeswoman told AFP.

The 52-year-old singer spent the night in the cells of a police station in the center of the Spanish capital, the spokeswoman added.

In 2004 he was sentenced to a fine for having made threats and sexist expressions against a flight attendant on a flight from Madrid from which he had to be evicted.

El Cigala, who has resided for years in the Dominican Republic, the country where he was nationalized, is planning a concert this Saturday in Nerja, Andalusia, which is still standing.
