Cornetto spoke with EL COLOMBIANO from Ibiza about his career and the guaracha. The artist despite the recognition that the character has, not only in music, but in the audiovisual and fashion industry, keeps his face and identity anonymous.

How did the idea of a character like DJ Cornetto come about?

“It was born with the premise of bringing together art, fashion and music, also in Latin electronics there was no masked DJ and my dream was always to have a character like Daft Punk or DJ Marshmello, who are references in electronic music. Cornetto comes from the bugles (which is the DJ’s instrument), while the magenta color represents unity, respect and love, that generates something that in music is called plural, which is a very nice vibe”.

Who is behind Cornetto?

“The goal with Cornetto was for people to focus more on the music and the character and not on me, that allows me to have a calmer, more relaxed life, that’s why anonymity.”

Did you dream of living what is happening with you today?

“Yes, two years ago, since I created the character, I had the goal of reaching stages like these, not only in Europe, but I have had the opportunity to play in very important clubs and festivals in Las Vegas, USA.”

How do they receive guaracha in Europe?

“There is no stigma, they do not judge it, as it happened in Colombia at the beginning, they see it as a Latin rhythm, which sounds very cool to them, because it has elements of cumbia with instruments like the trumpet that are in the Latin DNA. They receive it very well.”

Has that perception changed in Colombia?

“It has changed a lot thanks to the fact that artists from other genres have joined these currents, as happened with Farruko with the song KernelsAdded to that is the work we’ve been doing for two years, and musicians from other genres are looking for the sound of the guaracha for their songs. It is a task that is seeing positive results”.

How do you particularly define Guaracha?

“It is a Latin American multicultural genre, they are sounds of European dance that merge with urban sounds in Mexico and that here in Colombia adopts cumbia, which is a transversal genre from Mexico to Patagonia, that is why the guaracha becomes so strong in this part of the world. We could say that guaracha is Latin electronic music”.

What does it mean to arrive with Cornetto in Europe?

“I am in Ibiza for the first time, in two of the most important electronic music venues in the world, I am going to open for Balvin, I have already accompanied him in many festivals and concerts that he has given in all countries”.

It’s premiering theme…

“Very happy because I am opening a new era in my career, I have just launched They medicated me, a song that is very different from the others, because it has a very equal mix between guaracha, house and urban, it has barely been going on for three days and already has more than 250,000 reproductions. That makes me very happy.”
