Guayaquil’s 201 years of independence will be celebrated this year with face-to-face events, although with reduced capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which in recent weeks marks a downward trend in reported infections and deaths.

Due to the restrictions of massive events, these events will be transmitted by the institutional account of the municipal company on Facebook (Guayaquil is my destination). On this occasion, for the second year in a row, there are no student parades or dance groups scheduled in the city.

The festivities agenda, organized by the Guayaquil Tourism, Civic Promotion and International Relations Company, It will take place from October 1 to 31 in the midst of the economic reactivation of various activities, including the tourist industry, in the Main Port. As part of the celebration, uA total of 46 Guayaquil flags will be installed on the poles installed along 9 de Octubre avenue, from Lorenzo de Garaycoa street to Malecón Simón Bolívar avenue.

On the first day of the celebration, the presence of the mayor, Cynthia Viteri, and other local authorities is expected in the traditional civic proclamation in the Plaza del Centenario, on Lorenzo de Garaycoa and 9 de Octubre streets, on October 1, from 09:00. The event will feature the presentation of national artists who will sing songs alluding to the city and students from the Almirante Illingworth Naval Academy who will give the honor to the act.

For 6:00 p.m. on October 1, the act of lighting 2,600 meters of LED light hose is scheduled to be installed in the Administration Square, located on the ground floor of the municipal building. The event provides for the presentation of the band of musicians from the Buenos Aires Municipality. The space will be illuminated until October 31, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

On October 2, from 5:00 p.m., at the José de la Cuadra Theater (Plaza Colón) an artistic-musical show will be held in tribute to Julio Jaramillo. The event will have the participation of the artists Christian Jaramillo, Ivonne Andino, Roberto Rodríguez and Jonathan Luna.

The next day, instead, There will be a marathon that will start from the June 5 bridge, passing through sectors such as the Simón Bolívar, Kennedy, Urdesa, Los Ceibos boardwalk, among others. One of the most relevant events on the festivities agenda will be the eighth edition of the Raíces gastronomic fair, which will be held from October 7 to 10, from 10:00 to 21:00, with a capacity of 50% in rooms A, B, C and exteriors of the Guayaquil Convention Center. The official opening ceremony will be attended by Viteri on Thursday 7, starting at 12:00, in the Vicente Rocafuerte room.

This year an area of ​​10,000 square meters will be enabled and a capacity of 50% will be allowed, that is, 5,357 people at the same time, with the proper anti-COVID-19 health care. To keep monitoring the number of visitors, Expoplaza will have a digital counting system in order to monitor the entry and exit of citizens, as was applied in the last edition of the fair in 2020.

In parallel, as in previous meetings, visitors will be able to learn about the elaborations of 27 holes and an offer of a trade fair with 80 stands of different companies and entrepreneurs related to the food and gastronomy industry. In addition, training will be given to chefs and students of the degree, there will be an exhibition space of varieties of liquors, cheese, sausages, chocolates, among others.

Events for October 9

As part of the extensive festivities agenda, the Centro de Arte Theater will be the setting for the musical festival ‘Guayaquil Independiente es mi Destino’ from October 7 to 9 with the presentation of various artists such as Gerardo Morán, Don Medardo y sus Players, Máximo Ladders. The first two days the event will be from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., while on the last day it will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

For October 9, the day of remembrance of the independence of Guayaquil, there will be five important events.

From 04:30, in the Administration Square, the civic ceremony of greeting to the Glorious Dawn will be held. Also that day, from 10:00, an aeronautical exhibition will begin with an exhibition of aircraft, photographs and rifle gymnastics in the El Fortín de la Planchada esplanade, at the foot of the Las Peñas neighborhood, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the creation of the national aviation and the Ecuadorian Air Force, which is remembered every October 27. This event will continue until Sunday 10, from 10:00 until 21:00.

Likewise, at noon, in the southern area of ​​the Simón Bolívar boardwalk, the civic anointing and delivery of a wreath will be held in homage to José Joaquín de Olmedo, at the foot of his monument. There, in addition, a youth tribute to Guayaquil will be presented with civic choreography and a human slate.

Starting at 19:00, in the hemicycle of the Rotunda, the solemn session will begin with the presence of the mayor, other municipal authorities and guests. That same day, at the same time, a musical retreat will be presented on Malecón Simón Bolívar avenue and Numa Pompilio street, in the center.

On the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th, melodies alluding to the city will be presented with the band of musicians from the council in the Administration Square, Luzárraga Street and Panama Square, Rocafuerte Square and in the Seminario Park, respectively.
