The story behind the creation of an album that became a legend before it was even released, ‘Chinese Democracy’ of Guns N’ Roses, you will always have pages to discover from those who helped shape it, and different points of view depending on the role that each one played. That is the case of Bryan “Brain” Mantiabattery that entered the formation led by Axl Rose in the position he previously held Josh Freeseand before matt sorum…
During the Interview awarded to Rolling Stonewhich has allowed us to see aspects such as intimidating Axl could beor how this it mattered little how it might affect not showing up to the concerts of the tour, the topic of the decade that had to wait for this album to see the light has also been discussed: “Well, I think it was because it started with the original band. There were two or three years of chaos and then Slash, Duff and Matt Sorum left. Then Josh came in. That took a couple more years, and they went through some producers.”
“Brain”, which had to re-record what Freese did, keeps a positive memory of what would have been frustrating for others: “When I came in, there was a lot of trial and error as to what we were going to do, what style of music. It was a new band. Plus, Axl takes his time. And since this was all new, it would take twice as long. Then it became almost folksy kind of thing. It was like, “Now that it’s come this far, it might only be $12 or 13 million. That’s ten years. Let’s go for the record.” I don’t know.”
The drummer even admits that he enjoyed that chaos: “All of a sudden you’d get a call like, ‘Hey, Axl needs you.’ I was like, ‘This is as close as I’m going to get to something like Zeppelin. Who cares? Make it eternal. That’s the coolest thing, that it took 10 years.”
Mantia finishes off his memory by assuring that those concerts in which Axl was so late, in the end they had the vocalist giving everything: “In the end, if we started at one in the morning, the show ended at four in the morning. And Axl gave it his all on that show. I’ve never seen that fucking guy ever falter. If he starts at one, that show It’s going to end at half past four, and even though you’re asleep, he’s still screaming.
