One of the icons of rock en español returned to the stage in the capital of Antioquia: it was Andres Calamaro, who sang some of his classics at the La Macarena bullring in Medellín on October 22. However, the singer of “Thousand Hours” experienced a tense moment with the audience after expressing a personal opinion about bullfighting.

Apparently, in the middle of the show, Calamaro said that “I hope La Macarena will be full of bulls again and all the bullrings in Colombia too.” Immediately several attendees of the event disapproved of his comment and began to boo him.

After hearing the public’s rejection, the 61-year-old Argentine singer-songwriter continued with his concert, which lasted an hour and 40 minutes. After the incident, he referred to the public again to smooth things over: “Is it true that we are still friends? long live the vegans of Medellin, long live the animalists of Medellin”, said Calamaro to apologize to his fans, who responded with applause.

Bullfighting had already been prohibited in the administrations of several city mayors, including Daniel Quintero, who ratified his desire not to continue with this type of event between 2020 and 2023. “Through an agreement of wills, we have guaranteed that bullfights will end in Medellín for at least these four years. I am sure that this, at least, is the end of bullfighting in the city,” said Quintero.

It had already happened before with Andrés Calamaro

The singer-songwriter has publicly expressed his bullfighting in cities in Peru and Mexico, where. amid the applause, he too has been booed. In Lima, for example, after singing the song “Los airplanes”, Calamaro said that “Further south in Peru there is no one who understands bullfighting and salsa.” Despite the fact that most of the attendees broke into applause, the cries of “bullfighting no!” were clearly heard.

For his part, Andrés Calamaro still has four more presentations in Colombia. On October 27 he will be in Cali, on the 29th in Bucaramanga and will close on November 2 in Bogotá.
