A team of neurosurgeons from the Paideia international hospital in Rome performed a complicated operation on Thursday to remove a tumor cerebral to a musician who was asked to played his instrument, the saxophoneduring the intervention.

As reported the hospital itselfthe team was led by Dr. Christian Brognaan international expert in complex tumor surgery and ‘awake surgery’, and managed to completely remove the brain tumor without compromising the patient’s neurological functions.

The patient is GZ, 35 years old, a foreigner but Roman by adoption, he is well and talks about the intervention, emphasizing the calm he felt during the intervention.

“The architectural complexity of the brain and its remarkable plasticity,” explains Dr. Brogna, “make the brain of each of us is very different each other”.

“Each brain is unique, as is each person. ‘Awake surgery’ enables extremely precise mapping during surgery the neural networks that underlie various brain functions, such as playing, speaking, moving, remembering and counting”, adds the surgeon.

The intervention, which lasted more than 9 hours, It had a multidisciplinary team made up of more than 10 professionals from around the world, including neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, neuropsychologists, neurophysiologists and engineers, supported by state-of-the-art technologies such as neuronavigation with tractography, vacuum ultrasound, intraoperative ultrasound and continuous neuromonitoring.

A specific marker for cancer cells was also used that made them easier to distinguish from surrounding healthy tissue. “The intervention was really complex and it required a long preparation and a very high technology”, concluded Brogna.
