At the age of 20, Christopher Vargas is going viral on social networks like TikTok thanks to the appreciation of Quechua in a very popular entertainment genre among young people: anime.
Under the name of ‘Zachinin72‘, has surprised with dubbing in Quechua of series like Dragon Ball Super, DeathNote, Attack on Titan either boku no hero But his participation does not stop there, but also expands to films like Shrek or Madagascar.
Quechua as an entertainment channel
The works of the young man, born in Cusco, exceed 50 thousand reproductions in TikTok per video and, to date, they have accumulated more than 432 thousand likes.
“Since I was little, my grandparents instilled in me the Quechua and at a certain age I learned about dubbing, people who work lending their voices to great anime characters, movies and animated series, which I and my grandmother used to watch,” Vargas told niusgeek.
Precisely, the impotence of seeing his family member without understanding what he was seeing because he did not speak Spanish encouraged him to dub popular fragments of series and movies into Quechua so she can enjoy it too. “The first time I saw my grandmother’s reaction to seeing my work folded in Quechua I get excited. And the fact that people have liked what I do prompted me to continue and improve the dubbing video after video so that the Quechua promoted and made known to more people”.
His grandmother is the one who also supports him in his videos, being the one who reacts to his dubbing and who gets excited when he sees his mother tongue in worldwide productions.
The goal: promote the ancestral language
The Quechua it is spoken by more than 14 million people throughout Latin America and 4 million of them live in Peru, where it has been recognized as an official language since 1975. It is important to speak it and rescue it since, otherwise, it runs the risk of becoming extinct like the 35 other languages that are extinct.
May 27 marks the Day of the Original Languages of Peru. The celebration seeks to promote the use, preservation, development, recovery and dissemination of native languages as intangible cultural heritage.
Christopher Vargas has worked as an announcer in Quechua for public institutions, but now he is taking dubbing courses. “It is possible to promote Quechua through dubbing since these animes, movies or series empathize and the new generations identify with them. By the way, (the young people) reconnect with their roots through the Quechua language. It is a constant struggle to recover our identity as Peruvians and culture”.
