Why Has Henry Cavill’s Superman Return Taken So Long?

Henry Cavill’s Superman is back in the DCEU, but why has it taken him so long to return? (Spoiler alert)

Henry Cavill’s Superman has been a point of contention among the DC fanbase for the past several years, largely due to the fact that he’s been completely absent from this universe since 2017. But surprisingly, that seems to be changing to measure that Warner Bros. Discovery works to give a new impetus to the DC Extended Universe.

The latest news indicates that the star is set to return as Superman in man of steel 2which would be his first solo movie since the DCEU kicked off with the first movie back in 2013. This is in addition to his official return alongside Dwayne Johnson in the movie. Black Adamwhich is certainly a cause for celebration for fans.

But even with the excitement surrounding his return, there’s still the question of why it’s taken so long, especially after The Rock himself spoke out about how poorly WBD has handled the character over the years. And now, with the DCEU set to add a new chapter, comes the answer to the mystery of why Superman hasn’t been a part of DCEU history for the past five years.

Robert Meyer Burnett of Post-Geek Singularity, has shared relevant data on why Henry Cavill’s Superman has been missing from the DC Extended Universe in recent years. According to a source trusted by Burnett, Warner Bros. Discovery had planned to use Cavill himself in late 2018 in Shazam!, but ended up being played by another actor just like in the series The peacemaker:

Toby Emmerich the big culprit

“I have, let’s call this person a very high source in Hollywood. Someone I trust completely, who is in the know. And this person reached out to me a couple days ago and he told me that we were wrong on the John Campea show about the lack of Henry Cavill in the DCEU. This person, once again, a very high level source, one of the highest level sources at Warner Bros. outside of the studio…

Let’s just say that he has done a lot of work at the highest levels with the studio… he told me in an email, he specifically said that when they were making Shazam! The plan was always to have a Henry Cavill cameo at the end of Shazam! At the time, Cavill had more contractual obligations…like Superman in his deal with WBD, but if he had just made a full cameo appearance in Shazam! , he would have counted as one of those appearances. This was revealed by Cavill’s manager, who is also Dwayne Johnson’s ex-wife and manager.”

The actor wanted his appearances to matter

“Now, this very well-placed source at the studio…or works with the studio…this person told me that when they were trying to get Henry Cavill to do a cameo in that movie, his manager said, ‘Look, I had more contractual obligations, more appearances as Superman. But if he did appear in a cameo as Superman, that would count as one of Henry Cavill’s contracted appearances in a movie as Superman. This was said by the representative of Henry Cavill. Interestingly, that manager is also Dwayne Johnson’s ex-wife and his manager as well. As a result of that, because he wouldn’t play ball with the studio, he was playing hardball, Toby Emmerich, who was running Warner Bros. at the time, said, ‘Henry Cavill is now a persona non grata, he’s not going to work with him? study? He will never be Superman again.’”

Now that Emmerich is no longer with the company, Johnson has a lot more leeway to make decisions like this, as he’s finally had a chance to bring Cavill into Black Adam. This was one of the many reasons many people don’t like Toby Emmerich at Warner:

“Toby Emmerich is gone. He is no longer at Warner Bros. So the six years that Dwayne Johnson has been trying to get Henry Cavill in a Black Adam movie, or in a movie, that impediment has been removed. That’s another reason why the person told me that a lot of people don’t like Toby Emmerich because of what he was doing at Warner Bros. and that he won’t be sorry he’s gone.”

Will the return of Henry Cavill’s Superman help boost the DCEU?

Now thanks to Johnson’s efforts and knowing this history, fans have been able to see how much Henry Cavill enjoys playing Superman in the DC Universe and how much he wants his appearances to be meaningful every time he suits up as the Man of Steel. And in what appears to be classic WBD style, the company seemed to hinder the experience at all times while trying to build the DCEU the way it wanted.

With Dwayne Johnson linked to Black Adam for so long and considering his star power, he wanted to have an influence on how the DCEU moves forward for most of the time the story has been around. But with this reveal, it’s clear that he had to hit a lot of hurdles along the way, particularly with regards to appearing alongside Henry Cavill and getting Black Adam into a movie alongside Superman.

Although it is still unknown what Johnson’s official role will be in the DCEU, he has already made his mark on the franchise simply by opening the door for Cavill to return as Superman. The next step in the process is to see what WBD will actually do with the franchise going forward.
