Gladiator It was without a doubt one of the most important films of the beginning of this millennium. It premiered in May 2000 and its success was outstanding, so strong that the following year it won five of the 12 Oscars for which it was nominated. A boom that is still remembered today, after more than 22 years.
With Russell Crowe playing the heroic Maximum Tenth Meridium, the film undoubtedly finished consecrating the actor at the top of Hollywood. The film grossed more than 457 million dollars, becoming one of the great icons of the film industry.
However, the acclaimed film had a rather difficult background, from the recordings of it but also with some little-known events. We talked about the little relationship that there was with the main character and the rest of his companions, the tiger that attacked Crowe and the actor who died during filming.
Russell was not the first choice for this role, but was the great Mel Gibson. Although this alternative was ruled out since Gibson was in the middle of filming ‘The patriot’, another movie. Although at first he was not very convinced to accept, one of the New Zealander’s best decisions ended up being to say yes to this film and break it.
The problem is that many companions of the set did not seem to tolerate the attitudes that he had. Producer Branko Lang went so far as to ensure that “was a bit silly” and director Ridley Scott confessed that he had wrung her neck on more than one occasion. And even more so with the costume designer, Janty Yates, who assured that she would not work with him again and described it as “moron”. In fact, he even had a cross with the sound mixer Ken Weston and even with the blacksmith who made the weapons.
But the most particular case is that of Oliver Reed, cast actor who died suddenly of a heart attack on May 2, 1999, during a break from filming. He died in an Irish bar after accepting a drinking competition challenge from five young English Royal Navy sailors.
He got to drink eight bottles of German beer, three bottles of rum and several double whiskeys. She then collapsed and passed away, winning the bet but losing her life just two days after shooting the movie. Oliver He was 61 years old at the time of his death, playing one of the most remembered characters in the film: Antony Proximothe master of Maximum by becoming a gladiator.
Like many members of the set, apparently Reed didn’t get along with either Crowe while he was shooting the film, but without a doubt, none of that can be sensed in the film, since the chemistry they showed at all times was as intense as it was moving. Unfortunately, the veteran artist did not get to see the success of the film.
