One of the figures of literature that has been brought to the screen the most times is undoubtedly Sherlock Holmes. The famous detective who lives at 221B Baker Street along with his faithful companion, Doctor Watson, has had a large number of adaptations both in film and on television.
Created by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, this private detective is characterized by being a great possessor of great intelligence and the use of the method of observation and deduction to solve cases that sometimes seem impossible to solve. Despite having been the protagonist of four novels and dozens of fictional stories, sherlock it has been brought to the screen about 30 times.
One of his most recent portraits is in the hands of henry cavill who plays Sherlock Holmes in Enola Holmes 1 and 2. The Netflix movies are based on the novels written by Nancy Springer, whose protagonist is Enola Holmes, Sherlock and Mycroft’s little sister.
Another of the notable versions of the detective was that of Robert Downey Jr.who starred Sherlock Holmes in 2009 and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2011. Both films were directed by Guy Ritchie with a story set in the late nineteenth century and that has the charismatic detective involved in a series of mysteries with Watson, played by Jude Law.
An adaptation that received high praise from critics was sherlock from the BBC. This contemporary portrayal of the character had Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of sherlockmethodical, neurotic and arrogant, often clashing with Watson, this time played by Martin Freeman.
The small screen also witnessed another modern adaptation by Jonny Lee Miller as sherlock and Lucy Liu as Watson. Elementary depicts a disgraced Sherlock leaving London to move to the Big Apple for substance use rehab. The series had 7 seasons that were broadcast between 2012 and 2019.
Another of the most recent portraits was that of Ian McKellen in Mr Holmesthe drama directed by Bill Condon in 2015. This version features a Sherlock Holmes already retired from the detective job, he spends his days in the countryside, struggling against the passing of the years and trying to explain how his last case was.
Some more classic portraits of the character include basil rathbonewho played the detective between 1939 and 1946. Then came Vasily Livanov with The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, a series of Soviet films that aired between 1979-1986. Later it would be the turn of peter cushing who played Sherlock Holmes in a series of the same name, and in the film Sherlock Holmes and the death masks of 1984. We must also name Jeremy Brett who starred in the series Sherlock Holmes over a decade between 1984 and 1994.
