Carl Weathers became known for being the arch enemy of Rocky Balboa who then becomes their coach. With his role as Apollo Creed, the actor consolidated his fame in the late 70s and remained active in the world of film and television for several more decades. Beyond his role in the movie Sylvester Stallone, Weathers continued an interesting career that allowed him to participate in very different productions, ranging from the film Predator up to the series The Mandalorian.
From boxer to bounty hunter
He rose to stardom playing Balboa’s opponent. In the first two films, the boxer and Creed maintained a strong antagonism that, in the third part of the story, was transformed into a bond of trust and friendship. Before that, in his early days, Weathers served as a professional football player. At the age of 25, he decided to leave the sport and dedicate himself to acting, his true vocation.. His film debut came from the hand of Kung Fu-the movie starring David carradine and released in 1975-, although it was his role in Rocky, a year later, the one that really catapulted his career.
In 1987, the actor had the opportunity to shine again with Predator, the film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and in Action Jackson (1988), film in which he shared the set with Sharon Stone.
From the 1980s to this part, Weathers had sporadic roles in various productions. In 2017 he played Mark Jefferies, the Cook County prosecutor of Chicago Justice, which premiered on Universal Channel. “It is a program that invites discussion, about which it will be inevitable to talk; the production is impeccable and although you do not match the characters, it generates strong opinions because it shows how a system that has many grays works works ”, explained at the time to THE NATION about the legal drama he worked on four years ago.
However, the role that revitalized his career before new generations of viewers was the one he obtained in The Mandalorian. In 2019, the series whose plot expands the universe of Star Wars gave him the opportunity to play Greef Cargo, the benchmark of a group of bounty hunters. In addition to acting in the production of Disney+, Weathers came to direct a chapter of the second season.
“There is still a lot to do,” said the actor in an interview he gave to BeondTV. “I feel that my facet as an actor and performer and even as a director was not fully exploited. Rocky It was the movie that made me known. After that, after years participating in other projects and finally in The Mandalorian, I suppose that my extensive career responds to two reasons: a little talent and the ability to adapt over several decades ”. During the note, he also talked about how he projects his future. “Tomorrow may not exist. There is no tomorrow, as Apollo says. I don’t know what will come after The Mandalorian. I think about the here and now”.
