This Thursday, November 17, the Mexican filmmaker and producer Guillermo del Toro received an Honoris Causa doctorate from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in order to recognize his contributions to culture and art, as well as the support he has extended to the Mexican youth so that they fight for their dreams.

In this regard, the famous director of “The Shape of Water” pointed out the value that this academic distinction has for him, as well as the values ​​that UNAM represents for Mexico; Through various programs such as scholarships and the talks that he constantly conducts with various groups of young people, he seeks to inspire them so that they can achieve their goals.

“It is a very nice feeling, to receive recognition; UNAM has always been an essential part of the soul of Mexican culture and that link can be reinforced as many times as possible through producing, granting scholarships, speaking, I receive it with great pleasure” he declared.

Receive an honorary doctorate

In this regard, the director of “Pan’s Labyrinth” also spoke about cultural and spiritual poverty, which is more important than monetary poverty; In short, he pointed out that it is important for us Mexicans to remember that we are at a crucial moment for culture and science.

“It is my first goya in life; I had never worn a cap or hat, and the truth is that my fear was that they would not fit me but they fit me well. It is a very nice feeling, receiving recognition from the University,” he said del Toro.
