Although streaming platforms are constantly renewing titles, they also say goodbye to others. For this month hbo max has an important list of films and series that say goodbye, one of them is an acclaimed film of Quentin Tarantinoor rather, two films.
In the year 2003 Tarantino presented his fourth movie and one of the most acclaimed, Kill Bill. This story, which was divided into two Volumes, transfers to the screen all the director’s fanaticism for martial arts cinema with which he nurtured himself during his youth.
Kill Bill: Volume 1 premiered in 2003while Kill Bill: Volume 2 he did his thing a year later. These films tell the story of a woman seeking revenge against those who took her life and left her for dead. Her presentation generated huge box office profits and not only that, she received more than positive reviews from the press and the general public.
In the coming days Kill Bill says goodbye to HBO Max and before that happens we recommend a necessary kill and to make this feast of action, martial arts and blood better, we bring some curiosities of the film.
Why is Kill Bill split in two?
Kill Bill it is considered a single film despite being divided. Tarantino took nearly six years to write the script. When he finished he noted that it was a whopping 220 pages.
Regardless of the thick script, Tarantino began filming. At first Kill Bill was going to have a duration of more than four hours. Considering that there could be problems with the promotion of the film and with the public, Quentin had no choice but to split it in two.
kill bill before kill bill
The idea for Kill Bill started much earlier than it seems. True fans will remember that in pulp fiction (1994) during the scene of the Jack Rabbit Slim’s Come in Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and mia wallace (Uma Thurman), Marsellus’s girlfriend tells him of a failed pilot for a TV show. This program was titledFox Force Five” and told the story of “the deadliest woman in the world with a knife” who belonged to a group of elite assassins. Mia’s descriptions of the group fit the women who are part of the group. Deadly Viper Assassination Squadlead by Bill (David Carradin)
Another important detail is that during filming, Tarantino told Thurman about the idea of making a movie inspired by the whole world. martial arts cinema from the 1970s. They discussed possible story ideas between the two, and although everything seemed to be left in the ether, Quentin continued to write the film.
Red is indistinguishable from black and white
One of the most remembered scenes is the massacre in the Japanese restaurant where Beatrix confronts the 88 madmen from O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu). With his katana forged by Hattori Hanzō (Sonny Chiba) Black Mamba is in charge of teaching the subjects of his former partner a lesson.
In one part of the scene there is a transition to black and white. Many think that this moment is due to a tribute that the director pays to classic action movies, but it is not. It happens that Kill Bill was under the scrutiny of the entity in charge of assigning the classification to the film.
In the first instance the MPAA (Motion Picture Association for its acronym in English) ruled that the film was too violent. This jeopardized the release of the film. Without thinking too much about it, Quentin didn’t remove the scene, but decided to give it the black and white imprint so the blood wouldn’t bother the censors. The result speaks for itself.
budget for blood
Movies always allocate a significant budget for the special effects section and Kill Bill was no exception. Within the FX budget, about $60 thousand dollars for bars, chains and especially for blood.
Like there was large number of deaths on scene it was necessary a lot of blood and to pay a proper homage to martial arts cinema, even more blood was needed. According to the special effects manager, Kill Bill spilled more than 1,700 liters of blood.
These and other details make Kill Bill one of the most beloved films in Tarantino’s filmography, so don’t waste time and do the marathon on HBO Max before you explode like Bill’s heart.
